Aside from the superbly choral main theme, there is a second sub-theme that encompasses the dragonslayer Bowen. Due to Bowen's jovial feistiness, Edelman chose to write a fitfully playful and amusing theme. Even though it is a secondary theme, Edelman uses it almost as consistently as the primary one. Another item to mention about DRAGONHEART is its masterful use of dark chorals. This really conveys the dark tendencies of the film quite efficiently. The use of a chorus is something Randy Edelman is not generally accustomed to using, but you's never know that by listening to this music.
Not surprisingly, the score to DRAGONHEART was one of the most popular soundtracks of 1996. It seemed to appeal largely to the women consumers. I can understand its broad appeal. Thankfully, there is not a rotten track on the entire release, so one can listen to this CD all the way through. Randy Edelman has truly proven himself, over the years, to be a serious composer. One of the major steps in his career were his orchestral contributions to the immensely popular The LAST of the MOHICANS soundtrack in 1992. This was closely followed in 1993 with GETTYSBURG; my favorite of his scores. With a tremendous score like DRAGONHEART under his belt, there is no doubt that Randy Edelman is here to stay.
