Music composed by Vangelis

Original Review:

Well, Vangelis certainly was feeling creative when he composed the music to one of the greatest sci-fi films in history, BLADE RUNNER. The entire CD is commenced by the "Main Titles" where dialogue of Deckard(Harrison Ford) is running a scan on a possible "replicant." The deep, otherworldly ambiance that was evident in the movie is immediately created here. Vangelis is a master of setting mood, and this is no exception. This moody emotion carries on through to "Blush Response." Dialogue appears during this track as well. If you have seen the film, it is the scene where Deckard is grilling Rachel so as to decide if she's human or if she's a replicant. The music is darkly enticing.

Vangelis' themes are not blatantly evident, but are subtle and used exceptionally well in occasional applications. The most memorable moment to me is "Rachel's Song," and is the highlight of the entire album. I say this because of its unique vocals. Mary Hopkins' wordless performance here is beautiful beyond explanation. Each time it plays, I literally sit in a trance-like state in utter admiration for Vangelis' knack for thematic elegance. The middle of the album takes on that of a jazzy, romantic nature. "Love Theme" lays on the saxaphone in heavy doses, but never does it grow old. Many soundtrack fans looked forward to the first appearance of "Blade Runner Blues." Again, the jazzy riff pops up until the middle where a single piano takes command. So as not to have the listener forget the futuristic setting of the film, Vangelis throws in some swirling synth noises.

"Memories of Green" has some interesting vocals that very closely resemble that of a song by Icelandic diva Björk. Its menacing, yet reflective, overtones penetrate the air with stunning emotion. This gives way to a creepy arabesque interlude of "Tales of the Future." Quite hypnotic. "End Titles" is the only real action track on the entire disc. I particularly relish the moments where the tympani are present. Its driving tone is goosed along by perpetual layers of instruments coming in at just the right moment to outdo their predecessors. The release is brought to a movingly touching end with "Tears In Rain."

In conclusion, Vangelis did not create a score of any strong central theme, but one of intense mood and atmosphere. This was a risky move but it has proven to be a vastly effective one due to the immense cult popularity of both the score and film. Very few composers could make an entirely synthesized score so evocative and enjoyable. The version I'm reviewing is the German release of the score. I owe my possession of this grand soundtrack entirely to a good friend who lived there for a while, but is now back here in the States. BLADE RUNNER was a film of stunning visuals and possessed an intense, thought provoking story. In short, it was ahead of its time; thankfully, so was this score.
