My Breeder Opinions On What To Do If You Are Experiencing This Problem With Your Shar-Pei - These Are Possible Solutions On What Has Worked Well For Me!

When you have breen breeding a breed for many years, solutions to many breed problems tend to resolve themselves, in many cases, with experience. You, your vet, trainer etc. must be part of the solution by knowing how to handle a breed specific problem, and NOT part of the problem by NOT knowing what to do about it. Hopefully this page can assist you in troubleshooting with your Chinese Shar-Pei. This page will consist of certain known health "What To Do If" and some breed specific personality "What and How To Correct Puppy If", or just some interesting tips that I have used along the way.
Bad habits start be cause they are not corrected
(i) - Puppy or adult barking at the fence - try using the water hose or a squirt gun and use same command all the time "no" or "enough". Usually after several attempts - this stops.
(ii) - Always keep benedryl (available from local drugstore) on hand for any bites, swelling or allergic reactions - dosage is generally half human adult dose.
(iii) - Shar-Pei skin tears very easily, if you have a gash or wound you can keep crazy glue on hand, and stick skin edges back together. Healing generally quick due to the amount of mucin. This is used in many medical institutions and I have used it many times with 100% success.
(iv) - Puppy biting or mouthing can be modified by gently pushing the sides of pups mouth against the eye teeth hard enough for them to feel it and saying "no bite" - after a couple of corrections, this teaches them to play a little more gentle.
(v) - Chewing your things can be stopped by both crating and everytime puppy is caught chewing on things they are not supposed to - give them a nylabone and put it in their mouth, hold it there until they start to chew on it, they then realize this is theirs and that is what it is for.
(vi) - Hard to walk shar-pei. The only thing I have found works is a pinch collar available at your local pet store. These collars are only to be used for walking/training and all other times should be off the dog.
(vii) - Having a hard time cutting nails. This should be started at a very young age and become part of their routine, however many have success with the use of a dremel tool, and peanut butter on your finger, so while you are filing, they are busy working on the finger with the peanut butter.
(viii) - Have an odour in the house -try putting fabric softener tissues under couches or rads, or being pictures.
(ix) - Your dog tipping its food bowl - generally something new has taken place or bowl has been moved from regular spot, possibly a move. Usually they do it for a couple of days and then they stop.
(x) Teething - how about trying a frozen carrot for a pleasant change for your puppy.
xi) Very hot day - try giving your puppy/dog some ice cubes.
xii) While crate training your puppy is constantly crying - be persistent and use a squirt gun and just say "quiet".
xiii) Separation anxiety - try some Rescue Remedy - available at your herb store. Another solution is another animal in the house for companionship.
xiv) Your dog scared of Thunder Storms??? - reason being dogs can feel the static electricity during the storm and causes them to seek shelter near metal like a bath tub or other metal structure - Rescue Remedy is also good for this.
xv) Eyes temporarily bothering them due to stress, seasonal changes etc. try polysporin ointment for a couple of days.
xvi) Temporary diaherra or stomach upset, try Slippery Elm from your herb store for about 1 week.
xvi) Nose dry and cracked looking - try some vaseline or bag balm on the tip of their nose for a couple of days, should clear it right up.
xvii) Dogs bothered by insects - try spraying them with a mixture of Avon Skin So Soft, White Vinegar and Eculyptus Oil all mixed together.

More to come!!!!!
