    Click to see enlarged photo Set amongst the bustling urban industrial districts of Chicago (Illinois) we see the daily grind of cars (wagons) being ceremoniously shuffled from the large outer yards to the customers and industries nestled amongst the suburban streets in the Garfield Avenue district of Chicago western suburbs.
    Click to see enlarged photo As this area is served by rail from all railroads that congregate around Chicago various railroad companies operate the trackage, so it is common to see eastern railroads as western railroad motive power together.
    Click to see enlarged photo The main industry at this location is the Cargill Grain Silo which receives an constant supply of hopper cars daily from the BNSF and UP in the west, and due to the location trackside space is at a premium.
    Click to see enlarged photo Another busy industry is the City Storage Company that handles car loads of foodstuffs.
    Click to see enlarged photo The engineering plant handles small car repairs and fabrication work giving a varied supply of different and odd cars around the spurs.
    Click to see enlarged photo Down the line there is as small intermodal transfer hub which takes containerized traffic and piggyback vans, also US Mail roadrailers can be seen.
    Click to see enlarged photo A small yard area for holding the supply of cars to these industries are found at the east end along with a loco fuel and sanding track to keep the power fuelled and ready.
    Click to see enlarged photo The last industry is a furniture manufacturer requiring raw wood loads, paint etc and finished products going back out.
    Click to see enlarged photo The layout is 22 feet long built with a box frame of MDF with a plywood top covered fiberfloor board. The track is all Peco code 100. Operation is supplied electrically by DCC giving the flexibility of having as many operator driving as many locos and the ability of switching all turnouts from there own walkaroud hand controller.(No section switches and only 4 wire to each board). The layout has it own pelmet lighting and integral legs for each of the four boards in the straight configuration.

    Exhibition requirement are:-

  • space of 22 feet by 4 feet to allow for operating from the front
  • a 240 volt power supply, capable of 13 amps, for 4 fluorescent lamps and one 200VA transformer.
  • overnight accommodation for 4 operators where required. Transportation is usually by 2 cars.
