This museum, at 25 Brook Street, London, is the landmark address where Handel lived for thirty-six years of his life and where he died on 14th April, 1759. The Handel House is a short walk from Bond Street or Oxford Circus tube station and is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10-6, Thursday from 10-8 and Sunday 12-6.
There is currently a special exhibition (closing on 25th October 2009) to reveal Handel?s character, shedding light on his work, health, friends and life in London. There is a fine collection of portraits of Handel and also some of the significant people in his circle, including the picture reproduced on the front cover of the Diary. Also of great interest are the scores in Handel?s hand, and it is quite poignant to trace his decline in health by viewing these priceless manuscripts, including that of Jephtha written during his final years when he was struggling against failing eyesight.
Regular concerts for a small audience take place in the Rehearsal & Performance Room. These are generally held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6.30 and 7.30 pm and on Sundays from 3 to 4 pm. There will be a special event on Sunday 1 November when the Handel House Singers, directed by Laurence Cummings, perform highlights from Jephtha after a day of rehearsals at Handel House and Grosvenor Chapel. Any singers may join them, without audition, but they must be able to sight read adequately. For further information on the Handel House Museum see the website.
