ITO HIDEAKI

[ PYROKINESIS ]

Ito Hideaki might easily get lost within the plot as it is dished out incendiarily onscreen, because there simply are too many characters in this movie, not to mention the confusing titles it has been called in English (the Japanese translated it into Crossfire, but it is sold as Pyrokinesis (which is a more appropriate title, by the way) in some places such as Indonesia. But it helps that Ito's character is the only fireproof 'good' one, so even if you are not me you might still manage to remember what he's doing. Ito cooks, ladies and gentlemen. And he kisses. These don't come cheap in decent Japanese (or Asian in general) movies. Anyway, if you happen to stash something unspeakable about Yada Akiko, Harada Ryuji, Nagasawa Masami, or Yoshizawa Yu, this is one of the spots where the object of your apprehension is bound to be found.

The ingredients of this movie are serial-killers (oh yeah, that's plural), brutally-murdered young women, weird cops, totally hot funerals, a trio with superhuman powers, a damp and dank loneliness, and the entire fire department of Tokyo -- but it is essentially a love-story between ordinary salaryman Tada (played by Ito Hideaki) and the office's delivery-girl Aoki Junko (Yada Akiko), who has been a radically reticent person because of her pyrokinetic power.

Aoki killed a boy by unwittingly unleashing her power in childhood, and she's never been able to control this power since. But now it looks like something useful after all, when Tada's younger sister Yukie gets murdered as just one entry among multiple victims of the same criminals, while those responsible for these videotaped killings are set free because they are connected with some sinister political and policial figures.

Tada and Aoki believe that a fashion-savvy and loud pampered airhead named Kogure, son of so-and-so with an overdose of built-in sadism, is the one plotting and leading the serial-killings that took the life of Tada's sister.

Getting a digital camera containing images of the murder from Natsuko, a nosy sleazemonger who also met her death that way, Aoki plans vengeance for her man's sister, roasts Kogure alive but kills his accomplices, and from there everything and everybody is in a doodah.

She is now #1 suspect and Tada is tailed by cops everywhere, one of them is Sergeant Makihara, the brother of the boy Aoki burnt years back, and who wants to nail her because even his own mom, all the way until her death, thought it was him who killed the boy.

The other main cop is Sergeant Ishizu, a woman armed with sarcastic sense of humor and understatements of violence.

Meanwhile, Aoki gets a sanctuary with Kido, a fellow ESP-practitioner amassing malice intent and connected to a shady organisation -- a cool young man that sways Aoki away from all thoughts of the decidedly-square Tada for a while. A much younger girl named Kaori joins in to be Aoki's understudy, and they of course get Japanesely-attached to each other.

After a winding labyrinth of who's guilty and who isn't, in which everyone seems to want to whack everybody else, and when Tada finally gets a chance to say that he loves Aoki no matter what (that's true; he never understands Aoki but always accepts even the psychokinetic thing as a matter of fact), she perishes dramatically, leaving Tada in the rain, after which you'd guess he'd get a therapy for life and never ever dates again.
