Second Generation

2. Patrick Evoy (Michael ) was born 1 about 1787 in Ferryland, NF. He died about 1860 in Caplin Bay, NF.

Patrick was the eldest son of Michael Evoy and his wife Elenor (Ellen, Nelly in certain documents) who were proprieters of a public house in Ferryland throughout the 1790s. However, Michael died in 1798 and about a year after his death, Elenor married James Walsh. Elenor and James continued to run the pub at Ferryland for a period of time and then moved to Caplin Bay. It appears that when they moved to Caplin Bay , some or all, of Elenor's children moved with them. Patrick Evoy married and had children at Caplin Bay.

Patrick's name appears in all the surviving voters lists for Caplin Bay from 1840 to 1859. A notation in the 1859 voter's list, after Patrick Evoy's name, says "dead". It is not known when this entry was made; possibly as an update for the next election sometime in the 1860s. He is not listed in Lovell's 1871 Directory.

Patrick married Mary. Mary died in Caplin Bay, NF.

8 F i Ellen Evoy was born in Caplin Bay, NF. She died in Caplin Bay, NF.

It appears all of the Evoy property at Caplin Bay passed into the possession of Ellen and her husband Robert Swain Jr. of Stone Island. Robert and Ellen's son, John Swain, died young so their daughters Mary (Polly Ledwell), Elizabeth (Liz Miskill) and Catherine (Kate Walsh) eventually inherited this property. Elizabeth and Catherine married and lived in St. John's and sold their share of the property to the Sullivans. The share, belonging to Mary, who married Sebastian Ledwell from Little Placentia, remained within the Ledwell family.
Ellen married Robert Swain about 1857. Robert was born 1 about 1830 in Caplin Bay, NF. He died 2 on 23 Dec 1908 in Caplin Bay, NF. He was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

Vital Statistics death record states he was 78 when he died, however two differrent dates are given. One record shows that on Dec 23 1908 a Robert Swain died from paralysis and another entry shows that a Robert Swain died Jan 9 1909 from old age. However, the voter's list of 1908 shows only one Robert Swain at Caplin Bay.
