Aftershock - Chapter 9

by: Sonia

Carly had brought A.J. to the penthouse. She showed him just how much security Jason had for both her and Michael. He never realized how much until she brought him there. Carly stopped A.J. right by Jason's desk. "Wait right here." Carly took a deep breath and went upstairs.

**********

Jason sat by the phone in his room. There was a bed and a big table which he sat next to. He sat there contemplating if he should call her or not. Carly was probably waiting there. He picked up the phone and dialed the number with his pinkie.

A.J. thought nothing of it and answered, "Hello?"

Jason stared at the phone in disbelief. A.J. was in his house.

"Hello?" A.J. got fed up and hung up.

Jason gently put down his phone and tried to figure out what the heck A.J. was doing at his house. Jason then remembered what Sonny had told him. He didn't want to think about it, but he knew...somebody else wanted Carly.

**********

A.J. turned around to see Carly holding Michael in her arms. "You want to hold him?" Carly's stomach tied in knots as she said it.

     "Of course."

Carly handed Michael to A.J. She wasn't sure what to think. She grew scared, thinking maybe he'd know it was his son. Maybe he'd see one of his traits in Michael. She had seen A.J. in Michael sometimes. The way Michael sometimes made a face when he was angry reminded her of A.J. Carly wanted to cry at the way A.J. and Michael interacted. You would swear they had known they were father and son. She couldn't take it anymore. She felt like if she didn't get out of the room she'd drown in the lies. The lies she had made were suffocating her. She suddenly got up and left. A.J. was worried about her, so he put Michael in his playpen and went after her. Carly had escaped to Jason's room. A.J. knocked and entered. She was sobbing into her hands. A.J. sat next to her on Jason's bed. He wanted to help somehow but wasn't sure how. Should he try and hug her? Would that be too much? Carly still cried as softly as she could. A.J. hesitated for a second but rested his hand on her back. Carly looked at him with tears filling her eyes. She hugged him quickly and held him close. A.J. hugged back, not remembering the last time he had felt like this. The last time a woman made him this nervous or this passionate. Carly sniffled a little and whispered, "I'm sorry, A.J."

"For what, Carly?" A.J. softly spoke into her ear.

     "For everything," Carly cried.

     A.J. smiled, "Call it even."

Carly shook her head while still holding him, "We'll never be even."

A.J. pulled back, "Carly, let's just start over,ok?" He stuck out his hand, "A.J. Quartermaine."

Carly grinned and didn't feel so sad anymore. "Caroline Bensen. My friends call me Carly." Carly looked around. "Mr. Quartermaine, what are you doing in my house?" she joked.

"Ha ha." A.J. started to poke her.

     Carly started to laugh loudly.

A.J. saw the time on his watch, "I gotta go. ELQ meeting."

     "That should be fun."

"You sure you're ok?" A.J. felt like they might be heading in a better direction. It was happening kind of fast, but he preferred it that way. He wasn't very good at waiting.

"Yeah, better get to your meeting. Before Edward gets upset." Carly urged.

A.J. left, satified with the way things turned out.

**********

A.J. got to the meeting a few mintues late. Edward gave him a curious look all night. A.J. tried to ignore it, but it burned into him all night. When the meeting was finished, A.J. went out back and Edward followed. "A.J., where were you?"

"Out," A.J. replied, trying not to be obvious.

"A.J., I will not tolerate anymore secrets in this family," Edward stated.

"I was with Carly." A.J. regretted telling him, but knew Edward would grill him if he didn't tell him.

"Do you have something planned?" Edward always had getting Michael in mind.

     "No, Grandfather, I didn't." A.J. sighed.

"Did she seem angry with you?" Edward scratched his chin.

"No. I don't think so." A.J. was growing more annoyed by the second.

"Good." Edward smiled and laughed devilishly, "Good."

     A.J. didn't like that look.
