Aftershock - Chapter 8

by: Sonia

Jason threw his cellphone down and looked back out the plane's window. He didn't know what he was thinking calling Carly. He just did it. He was trying to clear his head, not talk to Carly or Robin on the phone. The weird thing was that he called Carly, not Robin. He was on his way to stay with Sonny for a while. He was happy about that. It was just hard to leave Carly behind. Not Robin so much as Carly. He tried to call again and tell Carly he was ok, but he refused to call again.

**********

Bang bang bang. Someone pounded on Carly's door. Carly was still crying, only now it was much worse. She loved Jason with everything she was and he didn't understand. She walked to the door and didn't open it. She just shouted, "Who is it?!"

     "It's me, A.J.," A.J. yelled back.

     "Go away!" Carly screamed.

"No, not until we talk!" A.J. said.

"What is it with you?! I don't want to talk to you, I don't want to see you, and I definitely don't want you at all! So please just go away!" Carly pleaded.

"No, I'm not going away." A.J. stood his ground.

"I'll call security. Where is Johnny anyway?" Carly thought aloud.

"I gave him a bogus call so he'd be away from the door," A.J. replied.

"Not a bad idea," Carly whispered.

"Carly, please let me in," A.J. begged.

Carly wiped away her tears and prepared herself for another argument. She opened the door and A.J. barged in. "What?!" Carly slammed the door shut.

"We're not finished with the conversation we were having on the docks," A.J. proclaimed.

"How much you wanna bet?" Carly said, rubbing her hands together.

A.J. saw that her eyes were slightly red. "Carly, are you ok?"

Carly groaned with anger, "What's it to you?!"

"I was just worried, that's all," A.J. confessed.

Carly tried not to, but believed him in a way. "You were?"

A.J. smiled, knowing she was believing him. "Yeah."

"Well, you don't have to, because I'm fine. I just got a little upset, that's all," Carly said, trying to resist his beautiful eyes and thoughtful look.

"Can I do anything?" A.J. was really concerned. He never let anyone know that he had feelings for Carly, no matter how hard he tried to resist her unique charm and beautiful looks. Carly was a very special woman and he still loved Carly. He wanted Carly. He'd never have her, though. He knew just by the way she reacted to his plan and would have rather gone crazy than to not believe Jason that her heart belonged to Jason. How would he get her, anyway? She was living with Jason, and Jason had made it crystal clear that they would never get along.

     "You could go away."

"Alright, Carly. I'm gone." He headed for the door.

Carly felt like strangling A.J., but she also wanted to comfort him for some reason. So, instead of thinking it through she stopped him to say, "A.J. maybe we could finish up our docks conversation another time." Carly felt like hitting herself, but she wasn't going to do that in front of A.J.

"Really? Ok. I'll give you a call. Thanks, Carly." He closed the door softly and left.

Carly balled up her fist and hit the air, "Carly, what the heck were you thinking!?" Carly then heard Michael cry. "I'm coming, Michael," she called up and ran up to him.

**********

The following morning, Carly had Leticia watch Michael while she went to meet A.J. While she waited on the docks, she couldn't help but think, "This is so stupid! I am waiting here to argue! Carly, you should just cut your losses and go right now." Carly nodded to herself. "That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to leave right now." But then she paused, "But he was so concerned yesterday and sincere." Then she thought, "But Jason was right, I can't trust him." She then started to leave, but A.J. was there just as she was about to leave. "Hi, A.J."

"Were you leaving?" A.J. saw that she was a little tense.

"I was thinking about it," Carly blurted out then struggled, "It's--It's not you, I just don't feel comfortable."

"Would it help you if I said I wasn't wearing a wire and I have nowhere to put a tape recorder?" A.J. joked.

     "It might."

"Ok, well I'm not and I can't." A.J. gave her a serious look, but Carly knew he was joking.

"Nope. It didn't help." Carly sighed.

"What can I do? I just want to talk to you and maybe see Michael, that's it," A.J. assured her.

"What do you want with me? What do you want with Michael?" Carly was very intolerant when he brought up Michael.

"Don't worry. I don't want to see him and tell grandfather how bad a shape he's in. I just want to make sure he's ok. And that you're ok, that's all."

Carly didn't know why, but for some reason she wanted to assure him that Michael was ok. She wanted to let him know just how safe Michael was. She grabbed his hand, "Come on."

A.J. loved the way her fingers felt between his. He got a weird sensation out of holding her hand. As she dragged him to her car, he couldn't help but think she was showing him some kind of affection.
