Tom Speaks Out
Artillery School------------------
It's been slow go this year, as far as re-enacting is concerned. The only things that come to mind are the school programs, the winter encampment and the artillery school, or should I say, "School of the Piece". Everyone who attended got a chance to learn all about the "rolling thunder". This event was held on a beautiful spring day in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was hosted by the Charlotte Artillery and Longstreet's Corps. We arrived to find about two batteries set up and ready to go. We learned everything from sponging and ramming, to how to sight the piece and all the commands that go along with it. Whether or not we canremember them now is another question! At the end of the day, we all realized why it takes 7 men to operate the big guns! (7,right? - I think so!) Anyway, we had a good time and even got a free meal. Well, actually it was a small meal in a brown bag, but no one complained about it. We all got our "little cards" and claimed to be "certified. "We had a good time and now appreciate the gunners a little more. - Sgt/Reporter Tom Ward |
