Tom Speaks Out

December 2002

Fredericksburg-----------------

Well, the 18th made its way back to Fredericksburg again. Most of us arrived Friday afternoon (and at least one came Thursday!), with the rest arriving Friday night (how's that car doing Capt?). Our fearless and most of the time eventfull leader had just a few car troubles on the way. "Your car caught on fire!? What!? "Ask the Capt. to fill you in on that.

As usual, we got up Saturday, ate breakfast, and headed to the city dock to stop the Union advance into town. We fought a small battle at the river crossing, in which the entire 18th was decimated! Capt Stowe went down, followed by Sgt.Austin, some privates, then 1st Sgt.Ward, and Cpls Brooks and Stowe. That pretty much left David and Kyle standing. Kyle, trying to save himself to fight another day, turned and ran, with David close behind. It was a small battle, but remember, we were a small company!

The afternoon battle picked up where the morning battle left off. We were standing on a hill overlooking the river, with the yanks at the base of the hill. They advanced and we fell back into the streets and the fight was on. That was some of the hardest fighting I think I have had in a long time. We would fall back, with the next company advancing ahead of us. Then when each company would fire about 2-3 vollies, the next would advance ahead of them, with the other falling back, and so on, and so on. During all this, yours trully decided it was time for a nap! Well, not really, but I think someone has the evidence on tape. To save my own behind I won't mention any names!

Of course after all the action was over, we had to hit all the shops we could. And, of course I had to go back to the Celtic Connection. Its a tradition, ok! All the stores in old town Fredricksburg are nice. Fredricksburg itself is a beautiful town in winter, and if you haven't been to this event, you are missing a lot of good fun, eating, scenery, and fighting!

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and lets all look forward to a happy new year. May God bless you all. May we all live in Him, that He may live in us. You are all like brothers and sisters to me and I love you all. Happy Holidays!!
