INGMAR BERGMAN DIES AT 89

Bergman laid to rest
18 August 2007–Ingmar Bergman was buried in a private ceremony on the island of Fårö. Local media reports only a small circle of family and friends attended. Read the BBC report.

Tributes for Bergman
30 July 2007–Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt paid tribute to Ingmar Bergman, who died on Monday morning aged 89, as one the "world's great dramatists," the TT news agency reported. In a statement distributed by TT, Reinfeldt said: "His work is immortal. I hope that his legacy will be preserved for a long time and that it will be built on." The enormous significance of Bergman's contribution to film and theatre in Sweden and other countries was hard to grasp, Reinfeldt said.

BERGMAN'S WIFE TO BE
REBURIED IN FÅRö

Ingmar Bergman's last wish will be fulfilled when the remains of his fifth and final wife are transferred to his grave on the Baltic Sea island of Fårö. Read the AP report (25 October).

BERGMAN HONOURED IN
NEW STAMPS

The Swedish Post will issue two new stamps honouring Bergman in January 2008. One will feature Bergman directing a scene from Fanny and Alexander, while the other will be a portrait of Bergman from 1998. Read the AFP report.

Swedish Film Institute The Swedish Film Institute in Stockholm celebrates Bergman on 6-7 October 2007. Twenty of Bergman's films and television shows will be screened, while Harriet Andersson, Käbi Laretei and Gunnar Fischer will discuss their work with Bergman. Read the Variety report.


MAX VON SYDOW AT THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Max von Sydow Max von Sydow will attend the Toronto International Film Festival (6-15 September), where he presents The Virgin Spring in the "Dialogues" programme, in tribute to Bergman [read the transcript here]. Von Sydow also appears in two new films at the festival, Emotional Arithmetic (Paolo Barzman, Canada) and Le Scaphandre et le papillon (Julian Schnabel, France).


NEW BERGMAN DVD RELEASES

Sawdust and Tinsel On 13 August, Tartan releases Sawdust and Tinsel and The Devil's Eye on DVD for the first time in the UK. The Seventh Seal 50th Anniversary Digitally Remastered Edition will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on 24 September. Coming soon: The Phantom Carriage, directed by Bergman's great mentor and actor, Victor Sjöström (Wild Strawberries).

The Seventh Seal Celebrating its 50th anniversary, The Seventh Seal (cert PG) has been re-released in a beautifully restored print, beginning 20 July. Check Tartan Films' official site for more information, including a trailer, images, and wallpapers.


BERGMAN WEEK

Kenneth Branagh At this year's Bergman Week, Bibi Andersson discusses her work with Bergman while Kenneth Branagh presents his version of The Magic Flute. UNESCO TO PRESERVE BERGMAN ARCHIVES

UNESCO On 20 June 2007, it was announced that Bergman's archives have been included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. The UNESCO programme was set up in 1997 to preserve valuable archive holdings and library collections. The Bergman archives include hand and type-written original manuscripts, drafts, notebooks, production papers, photographs and behind-the-scenes footage from the shooting of his films, and private and professional correspondence. BERGMAN TRIBUTE AT FILCA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The 7th annual FILCA International Film Festival in Trivandrum, India (4-10 May 2007) will include a Bergman retrospective. The films to be screened are: Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, The Rite, Brink of Life and The Silence. Read the New Indian Express article.

INGMAR BERGMAN AWARD

Angela Kovács At the Guldbaggegalan Swedish film awards ceremony, actress Angela Kovács was presented the Ingmar Bergman Award for "her great ability to give life to police commanders as well as Lars Norén characters or Henrik Ibsen figures, and not least for her unmistakable joy of acting."
