Legends

Tarabini Tales Legends of the WTA Circuit

The following list is to honour those whom we feel are the unsung hero’s and heroines of the WTA circuit. There will be periodic additions to this page as others are carefully selected and added to this elite list.

Currently this list applies only to people, (though this is currently a point of contention amongst the creators of the list), therefore all legendary animals and objects have been omitted! Also, the creators of the list might not achieve legendary status either, since they are the ones dictating who's in.

The Nominees
People currently nominated for inclusion on the list

Elena Bovina's whole entourage, with special mention to her mom: Margarita Bovina. For many reasons: Elena is easily one of the most amusing players on tour, because Elena is SO tall, her coach (the Little Angry Man (LAM)) is SO short and has such a bad temper. Because she tries SO hard and jumps all over the court. Because her name is so funny, because she carries a thousand bags on court, because her mother cheers for her in baaaad english instead of in Russian (goot girl! goot plan! super, super, fantastic!) and just falls sleep virtually anywhere (see Zurich report for this). Margarita, you are SO close to being a legend!

The list of Legends
(first, Pato and then, in alphabetical order)

Patricia Tarabini.

Patricia TarabiniPatricia was naturally the very first entrant to this elite category due to the fact that she is the coolest tennis player on earth!

Always so entertaning on court and always so nice and considerate to her fans off court, Patricia is truly a living legend!

Annabel Croft.

Annabel Croft This former British player turned commentator, talked herself into this elite list during her US Open commentary for Sky Sports in 2000, in which she single-handedly defended both the Spanish male players pulling out of Wimbledon over the seeding dispute and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario against the negative comments bestowed upon them by Andrew Castle.

She currently works for Eurosport where her commentary continues to be truly worthy of legendary status!

Anne Lasserre-Ullrich.

One of the coolest umpires in the game! This lady truly knows her stuff! Not to mention the fact that she knows we refer to her as "Number One" and seems to be extremelly amused by it.

Nous vous aimons Anne!

Charo.

CharoCharo is the coolest Conchita fan around, acts like a mother to all the Spanish players and always knows how to keep everyone amused. However, she has finally entered the elite Tarabini Tales legends of the WTA circuit list not for this, but for initiating the phrase “Lisa, Lisa, No. 1. You, me, cap, cap” during her truly persistent and legendary attempts at obtaining a cap from Lisa Raymond.

If Lisa ever gives in and gives her one, then she too will make it to this list!

Laura Cecarelli.

Laura earnt her place here for creating the now legendary phrases, “no caminen sentarse por favor” and “silencio por favor cuando las huevadoras estan …… huevando” during the Fed Cup tennis in Madrid in 2001 and for putting up in good humour with all the teasing she received from the crowd for the entire week, (and that still receives from us!), for her hilarious attempts at umpiring in Spanish.

Laura – you are a great sport and we love you for it!

Marisa Vicario.

Ever present at all her children matches and always kind and considerate to her childrens fans in a time when there are so many examples of bad tennis parents, Marisa too falls into the legend category.

Régis de Camaret.

RegisWhen you look at the coaches of the WTA players, you tend to see a lot of young girls with much older, very intense, angry, almost scary men....then there’s Régis de Camaret.

You look at the long time coach of French star Nathalie Tauziat and you see the complete opposite to the usual frighteningly intense coaches, who always appear to be out for what they can get. Régis always appears to be a nice, friendly, trustworthy old man – just like someone’s grandad – but, despite appearing so different to the norm, he has remained Nathalie's coach for her entire career and has managed to help her improve her game right to the very end of her career, as she rose to become one of the worlds top three players.

Régis is a truly comforting example of how a coach should be and for this he becomes the first coach to be admitted into the Tarabini Tales Legends of the WTA circuit list!
