The STORY

MAIN PLOT

A work of Minekura KazuyaGensomaden Saiyuki tells the story of four beings ordered by the gods to stop the resurrection of a mighty demon and to collect the five sutras before the enemy does.

The LEGEND

Like a lot of other anime, Gensomaden Saiyuki is loosely based on the ancient Chinese tale Journey To the West, written by Wu Cheng-en, which was published in 1592.

Journey To the West relates the story of the Monkey King (or Son Goku), who defy the rules of heaven. He mastered the technique of Taoist magic and was able to transform himself into 72 different forms from as form as small as a mosquito to a form as big as a tree. He also, stole the iron bar (his favorite weapon) from the undersea kingdom and rode clouds to escape.

The gods tried to stop him but failed. Giving up, they asked help from Buddha who let a great mountain, the Mount for Five Fingers, fall on Goku. Thus, Goku was imprisoned and remained there for 500 years until the monk Xuan Zang freed him.

With the intervention of Buddha, the Monkey King was assigned to go along with the monk on his journey to retrieve the sutras. Two other companions were also arranged to travel with them: a rather cowardly pig who was once a general of heaven, Pigsy and a fish spirit, Sandy.

The RETELLING OF AN ANCIENT TALE

In the land of Tougenkyou, humans and demons have co-existed peacefully for years. However, everything turned into chaos, when the youkais have suddenly begun to run amok and someone attempt to revive the demon lord, Gyumao, using the combine arts of science and magic together with the ancient scriptures.

The monk, Genjo Sanzo was summoned by the five gods who rule heaven. He was ordered to find out who is behind this turmoil and to stop this fiendish plot. Three demons was also assigned by the gods to help him on his quest: the half-demon, half-human Sha Gojyo; the human turned into demon Cho Hakkai; and the heretic Son Goku.

At first, the assignment of the other three demons didn't sit too well for Sanzo. Why assign demons on a mission to destroy other demons to help humanity? Wouldn't that be ironic and quite dangerous? But as the journey, continue, each will discover more about themselves, their reasons for joining the mission, the other's painful backgrounds, and the meaning of friendship ^^)
