HOUTOU CASTLE

The 4 Saiyuki boys encountered a lot of enemies. But their main enemies are Kougaiji's group or the people living in Tenjiku, particularly in Houtou Castle. I have divided them into 2 main groups: Group I -- Kougaiji, Dokugakuji, Yaone, and Ririn; and Group II -- Gyuumaou, Rasetsu, Gyukumen Kosyu, Ni Jyeni, and Dr. Fan.

Kougaiji   [UP] Kougaiji or Prince Kougaiji is the son of Gyuumaou and Rasetsu. His real mother was put under a spell by Gyokumen Koushu (his stepmother) who promised him to release her if Kougaiji follows her every command. For the love of his mother, Kougaiji blindedly obeys his stepmother and do all the dirty work (...against his will), such as the taking away Sanzo’s Sutra for Gyuumaou’s revival (...eventhough, he has no ill feelings towards them). Kougaiji, just like Sanzo, has quite a charisma and a good leader. He is definitely righteous and loyal. Although, he is Sanzo's main nemesis, Kougaiji is not that bad. He is a good brother to his half-sister, Ririn whom he cares a lot (...and often worried him). He has a very good heart and really cares for his subordinates. He is, also, a true friend to both Dokugakuji and Yaone. Among Sanzo's party, Kougaiji mostly looks forward to his fight with Goku. Kougaiji is an expert in both martial arts and sorcery. He can summon and manipulate shoukanma (a devil that appears when a spell is chanted) just like a puppet.

Dokugakuji   [UP] Dokugakuji is one of Kougaiji’s most loyal subordinate, his right hand man, and friend. He is all demon and Gojyo’s half-brother. His real name (before joining Kougaiji) is She Jien. Dokugakuji is a good-natured and friendly guy (so he is not exactly evil). Because of his loyalty to Kougaiji (who helped him to find meaning in his life), he decided to leave his life in Kougaiji's hands. Dokugakuji talks to Kougaiji like an older brother, which reminds him of his younger brother. Although he and his half-brother, Gojyo are enemies (because they are different sides), he still cares for his younger brother a lot (especially when the situation calls for it). Dokugakuji is also a good fighter and uses a big curved sword as his weapon.

Yaone   [UP] Yaone is the daughter of a pharmacist, who works for Kougaiji. She is really nice, polite, passive, and beautiful. She is also skilled in medicine which is quite helpful to Kougaiji and sometimes with Sanzo's group. Yaone is extremely loyal to Kougaiji after he saved her from being given to Hyakugan Maoh as a gift. She was asked to stay and work for him, and was mostly assigned to looked after Kougaiji's half-sister Ririn. I think, she is also in love with him, which, I think, is another reason for staying in his company even if she doesn't believe in the cause. Although, she knows that Sanzo and his company are their enemies, she still gets along with them especially Hakkai. Both of them often end up saving each others life, instead of fighting. Although, Yaone looks weak, she is a skilled fighter, a very good spy, and assassin. She uses explosives and sometimes uses a long spear.

Ririn   [UP] Ririn (...or whatever the spelling of her name is...) is Gyokumen Koushu's daughter and Kougaiji's half-sister. Just like Goku, she is quite active and playful, and also loves to eat (although not as much as Goku). She often runs off on her own to get Sanzo's sutra. Sometimes, I think she quite enjoys hanging with them, especially pestering Sanzo. She even calls him droppy eyes, and often quarrels with Goku over food. Ririn, just like Yaone and Dokugakuji, is extremely loyal to her older brother. She really loves him and sometimes would even wonder if his mother would also accept her (...if ever she is alive...). She doesn't understand though, why her older brother is so attached to his petrified mother and agreed to work for her mother. I think, Ririn, sort of, 'hate' her own mother who practically doesn't notice or care for her. If ever she is noticed, it mostly involved an experiment...with her as the guinea pig, one main reason why Kougaiji is quite protective of her. Since Ririn is really young and quite feisty, no one often takes her very seriously, especially the grown-ups. But she is also a good fighter, and extremely strong, and she could definitely defend herself (...most of the time anyway...).

Eye Color Green Hair Color Orange Species Youkai * Son Goku is voiced by Hoshi Soichiro, who also did Yuuki Aiba of 'Mugen no Ryvius'.

Gyuumaou   [UP] The leader of the youkai, Gyuumaou or the Ox Demon is the father of both Kougaiji and Ririn. He was buried in Houtou Castle in Tenjiku, where Gyokumen Koushu is trying to resurrect him. Gyuumaou is really ruthless, who refuse to coexist with humans. He kills and eats human for his pleasure, which is why he was subdued by Prince Nataku, the war God, 500 years ago. Gyuumaou's true strength is still a mystery since he never really fought yet. I think, he must be really strong, since it was, kind of, mentioned that Prince Nataku had a hard time defeating him and that the Gods are quite afraid of him, especially his revival -- the reason for Sanzo and his companions' journey.

Rasetsu   [UP] I don't know much about her but that she is Kougaiji's mother. She was sealed up and that Kougaiji is trying to free her, and Empress Gyokumen knows this. Gyokumen Koushu is trying to use to "control" Kougaiji by promising to free his mother if he follows her orders by retrieving the five sutras. I don't really know what kind of a woman she is, but she must be a good mother to Kougaiji since he seems to be willing to do everything just to free her.

Gyokumen Koushu   [UP] Gyokumen Koushu is the one behind the resurrection of Gyuumaou. She is a youkai and Ririn's mother. She orders Kougaiji (...at least tries to do so...) to retrieve the five sutras/lections, especially the one carried Genjo Sanzo. For Kougaiji to agree to do her bidding, she made a deal with him (...but I think, it's more of a blackmail...). Gyokumen Koushu or Empress Gyokumen is a cold and calculating woman, who kept her daughter around not because she cares for Ririn but because she needed her for Gyuuumaou's revival. She is really domineering and treats her subordinates just like instruments and toys for her own personal goal and pleasure. However, her true strength as a villain is yet to be revealed, whether she is indeed a force to be reckon with.

Ni Jyeni   [UP] I don't really know much about Ni Jyeni, but I think he's quite a genius. He's a really good researcher and scientist but, kind of, twisted. She gets on anybody's nerves, especially Kougaiji, whom he calls "Prince" (...with a bit of sarcasm, like he's mocking him...), and almost everyone in Houtou Castle. Both of him and Kougaiji don't seem to get along. Ni Jyeni works for Gyokumen but doesn't seem to be on her side or is it? He seems to be dedicated in reviving Gyuumaou but also looks like he has his own agenda. Ni Jyeni is one weird guy. He has a stuffed bunny that is always with him, like a security blanket. He sometimes talks to it and sometimes seems to ask for it's opinion. He is one guy with a really mysterious past. Just like Hakkai, you can hardly see him without that 'mocking' smile, which makes us wonder if there is more behind that smile?

Dr. Fan   [UP] For me, she's the most mysterious one in the Houtou Castle. No one really knows about her past that much. She works for Empress Gyokumen as one of the researcher for Gyuumaou's revival. She is quite dedicated to her work and her profession as a scientist, and carries out her duties efficiently, just like a professional. She dislikes Ni Jyeni so much, and she neither respect nor like Empress Gyokumen. No one really knows why she even works there or her motives, especially that she doesn't seem to believe in the cause. Does it have something to do with her past or even her family? What are her motives? Is it personal or not? No one really knows......
