SANZO'S GROUP

There are basically 4 main characters of Gensomaden Saiyuki. Genjo Sanzo, Cho Hakkai, Sha Gojyo, and Son Goku. Also, together with them is Hakuryu.

Genjo Sanzo    [UP] Genjo Sanzo is a monk of the highest order but acts the complete opposite. He drinks, he smokes, he kills, and he gambles. He is more of a threat to society than a help ^^) Sanzo has a really nasty temper, and hardly smiles. He totally dreaded preaching, noisy people annoys him, and had a VERY bad mood during rainy days. No matter how bad he sounds, Sanzo is quite charismatic. He has a keen sense of judgement and is accutely aware of other people's feelings (...of course, he doesn't say anything). Further, Sanzo is a born leader, which makes him the 'leader' of the group. He has a red mark on his forehead which means that he is close to the gods.

WEAPONS o Infernal Land Sutra (which his enemies were after) o exorcist handgun o paper fan (that came out of nowhere and usually used for Goku and Gojyo^^)

Cho Hakkai   [UP] Cho Hakkai is calm, quite perceptive, easy to get along with, and very kind to everyone (even to his enemies). He, sort of, takes care of the group, like a big brother. Further, Hakkai seems to be the most cheerful member of the gang, since he always has a smile on his face. Hakkai has quite an unpredictable nature since you won't know whether he is still joking or is already dead serious. Aside from this, Hakkai hardly shares his feelings. He has a dark past that haunts him from time to time. His right eye can't almost see anything, and one reminder of his tragic past. Hakkai owns a little dragon, Hakuryu that can transform into a jeep. He wears cuff on his left ear to maintain his human appearance and to control his demon power. His original name was Cho Gonou. He uses some breathing techniques as his weapon.

Sha Gojyo   [UP] At first look, Sha Gojyo seems to be an irresponsible person that you cannot depend on. He loves women, liquor, cigarettes, and gambling (which is his main occupation). He is quite vulgar, obscene and a lecherous water demon, which earns him the nickname "Erotic kappa". However, Gojyo is a really good and dependable friend. Aside from helping Sanzo to prevent Gyumaou’s revival, Gojyo is also searching for his elder half-brother, who saved him in the past. Gojyo is only half-demon, so he doesn't wear a limiter to keep his human form. He has red hair and eyes, a sign of a half-bred child born between a human and a demon. It is also said that half-bred will bring about great misfortune. He sports a long hair to cover the scars on his face cause by his stepmother. Gojyo is good in hand-to-hand combat and uses a Chijiriki (a staff with a crescent-moon shaped blade attached with a very long chain). You can mostly hear him say "Bakazaru" or "stupid monkey" (...address to Goku...) He is quite close to Hakkai (...his roommate...), usually pisses off Sanzo, and mostly quarrel with Goku (...usually, related food...).

Son Goku   [UP] Among the gang, Son Goku is the most active one, like a playful child. He loves to eat, eat, eat, and eat. He is easy-going, quite optimistic, and a loyal friend, although, a bit simple-minded. He loves fighting, especially if his enemy is really good. Goku is really close to Sanzo, he follows the monk almost everywhere and gets really upset if something bad happens to him. He also gets really upset if the other members got hurt and hates it if the others hid something (...like a secret...) from him. Goku is the most powerful member of the gang, especially if he took off his limiter. It is said that he is a heretic born from the "rock created by the Earth's aura". He was imprisoned in a cave made of rock on top of Mt. Gogyo for 500 years (...his age is also frozen...) because of a crime he committed in the past. Sanzo freed him and let him stay in the temple. Goku wears a gold headband or diadem that controls his demon power and keeps him in human form. He uses Nyoibou (a priest's staff), and his claws and mouth (when in his demon form) to fight. You can often hear him say "Haraheta" (I’m hungry)! and called Gojyo "Ero kappa" (perverted water monster) or "redroach!".

Hakuryu   [UP] Hakuryu is Hakkai's pet dragon and the group's means of transformation. In other words, Hakuryu can transform into a Jeep (...isn't it neat?), which is really helpful especially when you are on a journey. Hakuryu also has a keen sense of detecting evil, which is quite useful if you are always followed by one. Sometimes, Hakuryu helps Hakkai in fighting off enemies. Among the four Saiyuki boys, Hakuryu often quarrels with Goku.
