Evelyn Renee O'Connor was born on the 15 February, 1971 in Houston and raised in the suburb of Katy, Texas. She began to study acting at Houston's Alley Theatre when she was twelve years old. Later in life she attended Houston's High school of Performing and Visual Arts.

O'Connor had her first, unconventional acting role when she was sixteen, dancing about a Six Flags amusement park as a succession of costumed cartoon characters.

She then made her professional acting debut in The Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Club's Teen Angel serial in 1989. She then starred in Match Point, another serial for the Mickey Mouse Club. Later that year Renee moved to Los Angeles where she went on to star in Danielle Steel's Changes and in the NBC movie The Flood.

Other films and TV roles followed as she appeared in yet another Disney production, The Adventures of Huck Finn, co-starring with Elijah Wood and Jason Robards. She then had a guest appearance on The Rockford Files, which was a career highlight for Renee because she is a big fan of James Garner. Between these and other roles, she starred in two mythic action films for Renaissance Pictures: Hercules and the Lost Kingdom (1994) and the direct-to-video release of Darkman 2: The Return of Durant (1995).

It was while doing Hercules and the Lost Kingdom that O'Connor came to the attention of the excutive producers Rob Tabert and Sam Raimi and when Xena was created they offered Renee the chance to audition for the part of Gabrielle and, from a field of more than 400 hopefuls, Renee landed the part. And the rest, as they say, is history.

In her spare time Renee enjoys rock climbing (she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro!), kick boxing, jogging, rollerblading and horseback riding.

Renee and her husband Steve Muir are now the proud parents of a baby boy, who they have named Miles William Muir. He was born on 22nd September 2001 and weighing in at 8 pounds and 8 ounces.
