Shelving Solutions Shelves can get messy if they're not kept up. But it's not that hard:

  • Get bookends. They'll help you keep books upright - make sure they're sturdy and not slippery.
  • Pens and pencils should go in cups or jars or holders. Or keep them in a pencil box. Loose papers should go in a binder, folder, or file cabinet, or they should be recycled. Look at them - and throw em out if you're not going to act on them.
  • Things that don't belong should be removed. If you have a shelf for dolls, don't put books on it and vice versa. That goes for anything.
  • Display shelves should be covered. Coverings or doors help keep dust out and so you have less to clean. You'll also be a little more careful about keeping the shelf looking good if you have glass doors. To hide things that don't look great no matter how neat they are, use a simple cloth cover (cut out corners to get a streight edge) you can drape over a bookcase or shelf unit.
  • Keep a basket to put in random items you collect - and go through them regularly to throw out junk and put small things in their proper place.
  • Don't mix. A shelf of pretty vases might eventually be crowded out by piles of books if you're not careful. Instead, move the vases and use the shelf for books, or make a bookshelf just below the vase shelf if you need to.
  • Space savers: Put things you really don't need to display or use away - place covered boxes neatly under the bed or under/inside a coffee table. You can use corner shelves also to decorate and display smaller items.
  • Open shelves should be dusted - but use the shelves you have and keep them looking beautiful for company as well as for you.
