Frigi-nightmares?
Wake up! Here's how to clean up the mess:
If your fridge doesn't have drawers and sections, make some. Get clear
plastic open boxes and use them to separate fruits from vegetables, dairy from
jam, etc. Organize so you have a regular place for drinks, leftovers, etc.
Clean it out. The bread is moldy, the yogurt smells, and stuff's spilled.
Take out everything and wipe it up. Throw out the junk and the 6-month old salsa.
Reset the temperature to the right coldness. Use up food you don't regularly eat.
Get plastic boxes and bowls. Get them colored or stick tape on them. Put items
you regularly put away in these - leftover rice in red, veggies in green, etc. Make sure
these are sealed.
Stop buying food you don't eat. If you need it, you can run to the store. But don't
starve your fridge either or you'll end up hungry. Stock good healthy foods for
snacks: juice instead of soda, pre-cut carrots, and finger foods. Don't buy two gallons of
milk if you only use one by the time you go grocery shopping again.
Clean out the freezer too. Throw out old old ice, old ice-cream and frozen dinners.
Go through the fridge cleaning weekly and the freezer cleaning every other week.
Use wrap and clear boxes so you can see what's inside your bowls and boxes, and
see what condition they're in.
Stick a box of baking soda back in the fridge (opened) to help prevent odors.
Then line up the boxes and foods (don't leave them in bags, but keep them in
the compartments or in boxes where they won't get wet and soggy), and have a
great meal!
