The Story of First Quadrant Philippines, Inc.
Don Laureano Guevara
According to family history, it all began with Don Laureano Guevara who lived in Marikina in the late 1800s. Marikina then was an agricultural community and Don Laureano, popularly known as Kapitan Moy, was one of its prominent hacenderos. They say he traveled to Europe and brought home a pair of leather shoes.
One day the show needed repair so Kapitan Moy and a friend, Tiburcio Eustaquio, sat down to see what they could do. They ended up taking the show apart and putting it back together again. When they succeeded in putting the shoe back together again, they knew that they could venture into the manufacture of footwear.
Kapitan Moy did not dream of turning Marikina into the shoe capital of the Philippines. At the time, he was simply seeking to improve his farmers' productivity. He thought, maybe, they could make shoes in that dead season between planting and harvesting crops. Maybe this way, they could improve their lives. This impetus led to the founding of the Marikina shoe industry.
