There is writing on the back fly endsheet and inside back cover, notes made by the owner.   This is the best account of the Lincoln administration ever written.  The author gives a very accurate portrait of Lincoln and his thugs in office before going into the war itself from a very Southern viewpoint.  Now here is the kicker.  Mr. Horton was a Yankee in New York.  He was branded as a "Copperhead" after the fact.  He was smart enough to keep his mount shut and his opinions to himself during the war, otherwise he would have been arrested and lodged in the Old Capital Prison as so many others were by Lincoln and his henchmen.  This book was a best seller in the North as well as in the South following its first appearance in early 1867.  This is the fourth edition of the work.  This book gives modern day Yankee's gas (and I don't mean the kind you put in your automobile either).  This book, any edition, is on the rare list.

A YOUTH'S HISTORY OF THE GREAT CIVIL WAR IN THE UNITED STATES, From 1861 to 1865.  By R. G. Horton.  Third Edition.  New York: Van Evrie, Horton & Co., 1867.  12mo, cloth bound, 384 pp., 8p. advertisements in back, illustrated with wood engravings.  Written by a New York Publisher who was decidedly against Lincoln and his Abolition Party in power.  He correctly points the finger at Lincoln and his thugs in office for starting and prosecuting the war against the South.  In spite of the fact the Lincolnites after the war labeled him a "Copperhead", his book was still one of the best selling titles, right up there with Pollard's Lost Cause.   This copy is completely intact but the outer cloth in the spine is beginning to separate from age and use.  The title page has a tear in the lower left quadrant and someone many years ago tried to tape it together.  The page is still intact.   Previous owners name and date of "March 1st, 1867" written in pencil on the inside front endsheet.  Front hinge is beginning to crack.  Otherwise in very good condition.

Herrick & Company, 1897.  First Edition. 8vo., 75 pp., gold gilt embossed cloth cover, gold gilt top pages, illustrations of old plantation days. ROBERT DEVOY - A TALE OF THE PALMYRA MASSACRE.  By Frank H. Sosey.   Press of Sosey Bros., Palmyra, Mo.  Souvenir Edition.  Published 1918.   Original edition published in 1903.  8vo., half cloth, printed paper on boards, illustrations added by James B. Settles of Palmyra,  xvi, 157 pp.  This book is written about the famous massacre of ten Confederate soldiers by the Unionist of Missouri under orders of General John McNeil, a Abolitionist  militia officer.  President Davis in a communication to President Lincoln demanded the arrest of McNeil who was to be turned over to the Confederate authorities or he would order the execution of the first ten Union officers who came within his reach.  The text is written in a fictionalized format, but is based entirely on actual fact.  Names were changed in the book of some of the characters who played a part in the events, who were still living at the time of publication, but not the names of the Confederate soldiers nor McNeil and co-conspirator William R. Strachan.  This is another chapter in the saga of bloody Missouri.   This copy is in fine condition, printed on good, strong, book paper; no markings, good clean copy.

CONFEDERATE WOMEN OF ARKANSAS In The Civil War 1861-'65.  Memorial Reminiscences.  Published By The United Confederate Veterans of Arkansas, November 1907.  First Edition.  H. G. Pugh Ptg. Co., Little Rock, Ark.  ©1907.   8vo., cloth, 221 pp., illustrations, portraits.  Pages browned from age but in great shape.  Text is somewhat loose in places but still intact.  The frontis page is loose half way down the page with a small tear near the binding edge.  If the atrocities which took place in Missouri during the war have not made you mad enough, then this book will certainly do the job.  The women were subjected to every outrage imaginable by the cowards in the west who were not man enough to face our boys in arms on the battlefield.  This copy is in very good to fine condition, and is extremely rare.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JEFFERSON DAVIS, EX-PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY.  Together with comments of the press, funeral sermons, etc. etc.   Edited By A. C. Bancroft.  Western Book Association, 729 Austin St., Waco, Texas.  Copyright 1889 By J. S. Ogilvie.  1st Edition.  16mo., half cloth with marbled boards.  Spine reverse gold gilt stamped.  Outer pages marbled all around.  The last tribute to the dead President of the Confederacy and the tributes come form friend and foe alike who speak of him as they knew him.  Very interesting comments and very interesting reading, complete with several engravings of Davis and his home, Beauvoir.  His funeral brought about the largest gathering of war veterans as of that time; complete with each division in the cortege, the pall bearers, dignitaries, everybody who was anybody in the South, right down to the privates, and thousands of people of New Orleans.  This copy is in very fine condition, except the front fly sheet is old and brittle and has broken loose, otherwise a great rare book.

WAR YEARS WITH  J E B STUART.  By Lieut. Colonel W. W. Blackford, C. S. A.   New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1945.    8vo., cloth, xiii, 322 pages, frontis, illustrated with halftones. This is without a doubt the best history of JEB Stuart's command every written.  William Blackford was intimately acquainted with General Stuart; served on his staff during the entire war except at the end; was his chief scout and engineer, on many occasions his bunk mate and mess mate, etc.  Not only is this one of the most interesting books on the war you will every read, but it is one of the most revealing into the great events of the cavalry arm of the Army of Northern Virginia.  Blackford wrote the manuscript after the war, several years before his death, but never had the mss. published.  It was not until many years later that the mss. was found and turned over for publication.   A really great book about this most important command.  Condition is very fine +.  It doesn't look as though it was ever handled but once.

RECOLLECTIONS AND LETTERS OF GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE.   By His Son Captain Robert E. Lee, with Photogravure Portraits.  New York, Doubleday, Page & Company, 1904.  First Edition.   8vo., original gray cloth, with embossed garland encased Confederate flag on front, gold gilt stamped, xii, 461 pages, frontis, illustrations.  Although many books have been written about our great general, this one stands alone.  His son obviously knew details about his father that no one else would have known, and he was privied to letters and information that were of a personal nature from his family members that tell a much different story of the great general that you can not find in any other publication.  Upon reading this book you can not help but come away with a much greater appreciation of the man as well as the great commander.  Condition is very fine.

THE CRUISE OF THE ALABAMA AND THE SUMTER.  From The Private Journals and Other Papers of Commander R. Semmes, C.S.N., and other Officers.   Two Volumes in One.  New York: Carleton, Publisher, 413 Broadway.   London: Saunders Otley, & Co. M DCCC LXIV (1864).  First Edition.   This is the very first book on the subject and written during the progress of the war.  The fate of the Sumter and Alabama, however, was already sealed at the time of publication so no secrets were given out.  This book was first published in England in the same year, and this is the first American edition.  It was published anonymously by a ghost writer in England but with the full knowledge of Admiral Semmes and others, who contributed the information for publication.  In the appendix no. 1 is a list of every capture of both ships during service, where and when, the amount of spoils and the fate of that ship.  In appendix 2, is the day by day log of each ship, every latitude and port up to the time each was destroyed.  The other appendixes are of crew members and others who knew something of the history of the Alabama.  I don't think this book has ever been read, and it is in as near perfect condition as you could ever hope to find.  Extremely fine and extremely rare.

NARRATIVE OF MILITARY OPERATIONS, DIRECTED DURING THE LATE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES,  By Joseph E. Johnston, General, C. S. A.    Illustrated by Steel Plates and Maps.  New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1874.  First Edition.  There were four full generals during the short lived Confederacy: Generals Lee, Beauregard, Bragg and Johnston.  Had General Johnston not had the bad luck to get himself badly wounded in the Peninsula campaign he would have remained the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and General Lee may never gained the reputation that he so rightly deserved.  Johnston and Lee were the best the South had to offer followed only by General G.P.T. Beauregard.  This is a full and detailed account of his operations during the War Between the States.  President Davis disliked Johnston so much that he was determined to keep him out of the limelight whenever possible, but each time the Southern Army of Mississippi and that of Tennessee was taking a beating or about to take one, President Davis would call on Johnston to try to save the day, but it was usually too little to late.  You will not find a better narrative on the actions of the Army of Tennessee anywhere.   This great book has in the past been professional repaired but the hinges still have stress cracks in them, otherwise this book is in very good plus condition with no pages missing or damaged in anyway.  Extremely rare.

REMINISCENCES OF THE CIVIL WAR.  By General John B. Gordon of the Confederate Army.  With portraits.  New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1903.  First Edition.  8vo., original blue cloth with seal of the Confederacy, xiii, 474 pages.  There are numerous great narratives on the Army of Northern Virginia and its part in the great struggle for Southern Independence from 1861 to 1865, and this one ranks up with the very best.  General Gordon, of Georgia, went to war as a captain of a company of rough north Georgia mountaineers and eventually became a division commander and ultimately one of General Lee's best and most trusted officers.   Although he was seriously wounded during the war he somehow managed to survive and surrendered the remnant of his division at Appomattox Courthouse in April, 1865.   This extremely popular book is in fine plus condition with only the slightest amount of looseness in the front joint, which is the only fault I can find with the book.   The original owner of the book has recorded the death of Gen. Gordon on one page in pencil, and on another page the death of Gen. Longstreet.  Don't miss this one.

ECHOES FROM THE SOUTH. Comprising The Most Important Speeches, Proclamations, and Public Acts Emanating From The South During The Late War.   By n.a. [Edward A. Pollard]  New York: E. B. Treat & Co., 1866.   First Edition.   16mo., dark green cloth, title stamped on spine in gold gilt, 211 pages, 4 pages ads in back.  Although this book was erroneously attributed to B. Estavan, the unknown "Colonel of Cavalry"  of the Confederate States Army who goes to England and writes his one and only book entitled War Pictures From The South, it is in fact edited by Edward A. Pollard the Southern Historian.  There is an excellent speech by Alexander H. Stephens in 1860; the Ordinances of Secession of each of the Confederate States; a Speech of Jefferson Davis on leaving the U.S. Senate; many other speeches and proclamations, etc.  There is also a listing of all of the Confederate generals and where they commanded in the first year of the war.  This book was the personal copy of Ulrich Bonnell Phillips, Professor of History at Tulane University in Louisiana, author of several books on the Confederacy and the old South, and is in fine condition and extremely rare.  Signed.

Appleton and Company, 1875.  Second Edition.  8vo., green cloth, embossed borders with gold gilt title half title and coat of arms of the Lee Family on front, gold gilt spine title; xvi, 509 pages, engraved portraits, illustrations.  Written by someone who knew him well and who served under him during the war and after.  Nothing more need be said. This is the most popular of all the books written about the great chieftain of our Southern Confederacy.  This book is in fine condition and would rank better except for some light foxing on the old cover material.  The book has been used and handled by the original owner in Mobile, Alabama who purchased the book new and it came from her estate.

Dabney, D.D. of the Union Theological Seminary, Virginia.  Illustrated with Steel Portrait and Eleven Diagrams.  New York: Blelock & Co., 19 Beekman Street.  Richmond, Va., and Philadelphia, Pa., National Publishing Company, 1866.  First Edition.   8vo., original dark brown cloth, blind embossed front, gold gilt title on spine, xii, 742 pages, illustrated.   Professor Dabney first published this book under a slightly different title in a two volume set in 1864, and had it printed in England.  This is the first American Edition.  The cover is in great shape, no cracked hinges.  The text pages, however, have toned with age which is common in all of this title because of the cheap paper which was used.  The title page is cracked two thirds of the way down but still holding, which can be easily repaired by a professional bindery.  This is the most popular history of the great commander, and is extremely rare in any condition.

RECOLLECTIONS OF A VIRGINIAN in the Mexican, Indian, and Civil Wars.  By General Dabney Herndon Marui, Ex-United States Minister To Columbia.   New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1894.  First Edition.  8vo., original gray cloth with blue foil stamped half title and sword on front, gold gilt stamped on spine; xi, 279 pages.  General Marui was not needed in Virginia so was sent South, first to Vicksburg, then to Meridian, where he was promoted and given command of the Department of the Gulf and headquartered in Mobile where he remained until the close of the war.  Many people of the area came under his careful eye, which he writes about.   Even General Nathan B. Forrest was placed under his command during the last two years of the war but General Maury gave him free reign to do as he had always done.   He devotes two chapters in his book to General Forrest and gives some very interesting information that I have never seen in print any where else. This book is in fine condition and would be in very fine condition except for some mold damage on the back cover in the lower outside edge and a small smudge on the front cover at the tip of the sword.  Otherwise the book is in great shape for its age, and rare.

MORGAN'S ESCAPE.  A THRILLING STORY OF WAR TIMES.   A True History of the Raid of General Morgan and His Men Through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio; Their Incarceration in the Columbus Penitentiary, Escape Therefrom and Tragic Death of the Intrepid Leader.  By Capt. L. D. Hockersmith.  Copyright 1903 by L. D. Hockersmith.  Glenn's Graphic Print, Madisonville, Ky., 1903.  First, and only, Edition.  8vo., paper wrappers, 54 pages, double column printed, frontis and portrait of Capt. Hockersmith.   This is the most in-depth and critical narrative of the escape of General John H. Morgan and some of his officers that I have ever read; far more detailed and accurate than the account given in General Basil Duke's history of Morgan's Cavalry.  Captain Hockersmith was the man who planned and executed the escape and knew every detail of the plan and how it was carried out.  The little book is in very good plus condition with the exception of the brittle cover where the staples hold all together.  The cover is cracked at the top above the staple and at the bottom below the staple; there is a small chip out of the back lower corner and a small tear opposite that near the spine.  Other than that I can find nothing wrong with the booklet.  There are so few copies of this book left that its rarity can not be determined as yet.  I personally have found only two other copies and those in special collections at large libraries.

THE LOST CAUSE; A NEW SOUTHERN HISTORY OF THE WAR OF THE CONFEDERATES, etc... By Edward A. Pollard, of Virginia, New and Enlarged Edition, with Numerous Splendid Steel Portraits.  New York: E. B. Treat & Co., Publishers, 1868.  Second Edition.  Royal 8vo., original cloth with blind embossed design on cover and gold gilt cresent and star on front, title and palmetto on spine.  This is the only edition which has the large fold out, colored, engraved map of the United States showing where the principle battles took place.  Mr. Pollard earned the reputation of being the historian of the war and upon reading this great book it is easy to understand why.  The condition is fine plus; hinges are strong, everything is in place and in good order.  The spine is sun faded which is common in many old books that were placed on a shelf for many long years where sun light could get to them.  For some unexplained reason this edition did not sell as well as the first edition, yet this one was the most complete and has the addition of a steel engraved, hand colored, map, making it far more desirable, today, than the first.

BEECHENBROOK; A RHYME OF THE WAR.  By Margaret J. Preston.  Baltimore: Kelly & Piet, Publishers, 1866.  First Edition.    16mo., full cowhide with gold gilt title on front cover and gilt page edges, 94 pages.  The dedication page says it best: "To Every Southern Woman, Who Has Been Widowed By the War, I Dedicate This Rhyme, Published During the Progress of the Struggle and Now Re-Produced - As A Faint Memorial of Sufferings, of Which There Can Be No Forgetfulness.  M. J. P."   This book was first published in Richmond in 1865, but before it could be released that city came under fire from Yankee cannon and fire destroyed all of the books.  The hinges were broken but some repair work has been done to the inside joints and there is some leather chipped or missing from the very bottom of the spine.  The old leather is quite brittle but a softener has been used to help the problem.  Otherwise the book is in great shape; pages are clean and tight.   A very collectable book of Confederate poetry.  Mrs. Preston, a Confederate till the day she died, had no intention of forgiving or forgetting.  God bless the old mothers of the South.

BATTLEFIELDS OF THE SOUTH, FROM BULL RUN TO FREDERICKSBURGH; With Sketches of Confederate Commanders, and Gossip of the Camps.  By An English Combatant, Lieutenant of Artillery On The Field Staff.  New York: John Bradburn, No. 49 Walker Street. Successor To M. Doolady, 1864.  First American Edition.  It was at one time thought this was a second edition but better research has shown this to be the first edition published in America during the latter part of the year 1863, after the London Edition was published earlier that year.  This book was released in December, 1863 in New York but carries the date 1864 on the title page.  8vo., blind embossed cloth, with gold gilt title on spine, xxvii, 517 pages, 2 fold out maps.  Title on the backstrip reads Southern History of the War.  Battles Fields of the South.   The condition is fine throughout.  However, the cloth covering is beginning to chip from old age along the spine and in places along the edges and corners on the outside only.  The inside is in near perfect condition for a book this old.  This is a copy retired from the New Jersey Historical Society.  Their loss is our gain. This is without a doubt the very best narrative of the first two years of the war ever written by a private soldier; an eye-witness and participant in the events as they were happening.   The events which were taking place in Missouri and around New Orleans were described in detail by young men that he knew who also participated in those areas of the war and wrote to him giving graphic details of their part in the great events.  The author was in fact born in England but was reared in America and educated here.  He enlisted in the 18th Mississippi Regiment at Yazoo City, Mississippi and his regiment was brigaded with the 13th and 17th Mississippi and a Virginia Regiment.  His name was Thomas E. Caffee.  His book is not only Extremely Rare but it is one of the best of narratives.

11.    Original steel engraving of General Joseph E. Johnston with his signature below the engraved portrait.  It is mounted in an old frame under glass, but the gray masking around it looks homemade.  The engraving is in excellent condition, probably done in the mid to late 1860's.

US $225.00

14.    THE BEST AND RAREST OF ALL.  Three original CDV's, or photographs if you will, of General John Hunt Morgan and some of his men.  The first is an original photo of Lieutenant John H. Morgan in the uniform of a United States officer during the Mexican War.  Made in 1848 or 49.  The second is of General Morgan in the uniform of a Confederate General.  It is the last known photograph made of him before he was murdered in East Tennessee in 1864.  The third photo is the rarest of all.  Six of his men in prison.  Each man is identified and the photo was made by the prison photographer in 1864.  Each man is in uniform and four are seated and two standing behind.  All three are in a large old frame.  The photo's and frame are old but the masking is modern and the names of everyone have been gold foil stamped at the appropriate place. An unbelievable one time offer that you will never find again.

15.    General Andrew Jackson.  An original copper plate engraving of the general on horseback marching into the Creek Indian Nation in 1813.  The engraving was printed during the 1840's, long before color was invented for printing.   The engraving is colored by hand using watercolor, or die, in use during that period.  The engraving was removed from a book about American Indians and placed in a very old frame and tastefully matted, or masked.  The fancy old frame is worth as much, or more, than the engraving.  Engraving is 5½ x 8½ inches.  Extremely rare.
