Pingos near Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.

The two mounds in this photograph are pingos, ice-cored mounds covered by soil. Pingos occur in permafrost areas and are common in the Tuktoyaktuk area of the Northwest Territories. These features along the coast are about 40 m in height and protrude above a flat landscape lying between low uplands and the sea.
