Breeding Program

The Merinotech Breeding program is based on measured performance backed by strict visual assessment.

Merinotech Victoria has been using Estimated Breeding Values calculated using Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) procedures since 1991. Merinotech Victoria is one of the first merino breeding programs in Australia to access this advanced method of analysis, which uses all of the information from relatives as well as the individual's own performance to produce EBVs. These EBVs are more accurate (ie, they are a better guide to an animal's True Breeding Value) than raw data or EBVs calculated without the use of information from relatives or correlated traits.

Single Sire matings and full pedigree recording allows accurate assessment of the breeding value of sires and dams. Sires are chosen from a combination of top performing young rams and proven older sires. At least 2 older sires (rams used in previous years) are used to provide across year genetic linkage.

Merinotech Victoria's best sires are entered in Central Test Sire Evaluation and AI sires are sourced from amongst high ranking rams from CTSE.

Genetic Progress

The use of across year and flock EBVs has brought about rapid genetic progress.

The graph shows that the 12% Micron Premium Index has increased 43 points from 1994 til 2005, or 3.3 % per year.

This is a combination of increased Fleece Weight (2.5% in 10 years) and decreased Fibre Diameter ( 1.1u in 10 years).
