About us

Merinotech was established in 1988 when a nationwide group of Merino breeders took the bold initiative in setting up a breeding company to fully exploit the latest developments in sheep genetics and breeding technology. The essence of the strategy was to form elite ram breeding flocks within the environments of their clients and then apply the very best techniques in animal breeding and selection to ensure rapid and continual genetic improvement.

The breeding objective was clear: maximum profit in the commercial flocks of ram breeders and their clients. Thus the strongest selection pressure was for high clean fleece weight and low fibre diameter. Concurrently, sheep were selected for good constitution and easy care attributes, for high reproductive rates and longevity and for freedom from body and wool faults.

The result has been a highly profitable white woolled, easy care Merino tailored to each specific environment, with continuing genetic progress towards even higher profitability. The good constitution and easy care attributes also give Merinotech ewes a market advantage for prime lamb production.

Merinotech Victoria consists of three flocks located at Seymour, Balmoral and Charlton.

All of these flocks select sheep using across flock Estimated Breeding Values for measured traits, as well as visual assessment to ensure that sheep are structurally sound with the right type of wool for their environment.

Merinotech Victoria has been at the forefront in the adoption of best breeding practice. The identity of both the sire and dam is recorded for all Merinotech sheep and this information, plus measurement data for production traits on both rams and ewes, has been used to calculate across flock and year EBVs since 1991.
