Story of this band and this album
The first song I wrote for the album was 'Reach For The Horizon' in April 1999 with Phil Hilborne, an excellent guitraist I met a few years ago playing with Nicko McBrain. Then in May I started auditions for my new band. By early June we were ready to go into a studio to do our first demo.
We got Andy Sneap to produce three tracks, 'Born As A Stranger', 'Identity' and 'The Day I Fell To Earth'. As a band we seemed to really gel and this ended up being the final line-up of the Blaze band.
Over the summer, we continued writing and we spent a weekend at Greenhouse Studios in Manchester. With Andy Sneap we did demos of each song we had written on an eight track machine and that's where we finished 'The Launch', 'Stare At The Sun' and 'The Brave'. We also made a few changes to 'Identity' and 'Born As A Stranger'.
We started rehersal and pre-production for the main album recording at Rich Bitch studios, Birmingham, England and during this session we finished off 'Ghost In The Machine', 'Silicon Messiah', and 'Stare At The Sun'. We also re-worked 'Identity' into what it is now and we came up with 'Evolution' and 'The Hunger'.
After that, we went to Triten II Studios London England to record all the drums and backing tracks. We tracked all the drums using 48 analogue tape to give it a punchy and slightl compressed sound. When it came to mixing, we ended up using mostly the natural sound of the drums in the room instead of the electronic effects.
Vocals, guitars and bass were recorded at Backstage Studios, RIpley, England. All guitars and vocals were recored directly onto hard drive and we kept the guitars quite dry, the main objective being to get a strong, pure tone.
The vocals - I worked very closely with Andy on different set ups in the studio that would allow me to really let rip. Some times I used headphones some times we had the studio monitors up loud instead, so all the isnging felt as natural and as close to a live performance as I could get it. We tried to keep all the spontaneity and emotion of the lead vocal intact. I have to thank Andy for getting and recording what I feel is my best ever vocal performance.
When we had recored just about everything, we moved to Parr Street Studios, Liverpool England where we finished the vocals for 'Ghost In The Machine' and started mixing the album using the 48 track tape and tracks from the hard drive. We used a 64 channel S.S.L mixing desk. The whole mixing process took 14 very long days. |
