While visiting Laurie's brother, David and his wife Renee in Phoenix for Thanksgiving, I drove to visit my old house. I grew up near Camelback Mountain (above), around 32nd Street and Camelback Road. Sarah, Kim, and I explored my old neighborhood, and found the house where I lived from 1960~1970. We even talked to a former neighbor who still lives two houses from our old home. She told us that the house had been gutted and remodeled by a "Mr. Keating" who eventually went to jail. From a minister's home to a savings and loan swindler's home!! Yikes.
Aside from the physical changes to my old house, I was amazed at how much the neighborhood had changed and how small things seemed. Exclusive housing subdivisions, with guarded entrances, stand where we used to chase jack rabbits and horse. A Ritz-Carlton hotel is two blocks from my old high school. A Rolex dealer is in a new strip mall across from the old shopping center where I used to pick-up papers for my morning paper route.
Be sure to read about our trip to Sedona, and our Thanksgiving dinner. |
