About Faye

Shirley Wong

After completing college pre-U, Faye got a place in a local University. Yet, her Father had to work in Hong Kong, so the entire family migrated to HK as well. This one year in HK was a temporary arrangement. He intended to send her to study in the University of New York in the new academic year, where they had relatives.
During those 12 months, the young Beijing girl at 19, fresh from college, was excited about Hong Kong. Barely able to speak Cantonese, becoming just another face, lost in the city crowd, this restless girl became bored, and her Father encouraged her to take up classes of her interests. Faye did some modelling, but decided that it was boring walking up and down and posing, and set her heart on singing.

Her singing teacher was so impressed by the quality of Faye’s voice, that he introduced her to Chan Siu Bo, (then a manager in Cinepoly), who in turn, introduced Leslie as Faye’s manager and Alvin Leong to produce her album. Faye just had the urge to release the album, but never thought she would really become a singer and such a successful one at that.

She took part in the 1989 Hong Kong ABU Golden Kite Song Contest soon after, and came in 3rd with a song Alvin Leong penned, “Still That Same Old Phrase”. Alvin Leong introduced Faye to more music, especially R & B and still produces Faye’s albums today.

It can be seen since the beginning, Faye is a hardworking and talented girl who also picked things up very quickly. Barely able to speak Cantonese, within less than a year, she released her debut album, “Shirley Wong” in fluent Cantonese under the moniker “Shirley Wong Ching Man”, (given by her company) with her parents approval. This was Faye’s first step in the HK music industry.

After 3 albums in about 2 years, Faye still had not actually make it in the industry, by this time, it was time for her to pursue her studies in NYU. During this period, the distance made her heart grow fonder, and she became affectionately closer to her Mother and her loved ones. Faye returned during her vacation to complete her contract with a final album, or was it?
In 1992, she released her 4th album, “Coming Home,” the song “Easily Hurt Woman” suddenly became the song on everyone’s lips, it was Faye’s first known hit, that went on to inspire an English cover. Of course, Faye got a Jade Solid Gold award for this song. With that, Faye was faced with the dilemma of signing a new contract or completing her studies. No prizes of guessing which she picked.  After 3 albums in about 2 years, Faye still had not actually make it in the industry, by this time, it was time for her to pursue her studies in NYU.
