"The Kittens"

"Beetlejuice"

Once upon a midnight dreary, while stumbling, vision bleary, dodging hairballs and catnip mice, all scattered forgotten on the floor, I was nodding, nearly napping, suddenly there came cats a scrapping, As someone running leaping, leaping though my legs into my door. “Tis just the cats” I muttered “Going crazy just like before.” Only this, and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I remember, a full night's sleep was last December, Each little darling was plotting I’m sure while they sat upon the floor. Eagerly I wished for sleep, while knowing tonight there would be no peace. From the depths of the house a Yowl, Yowl filled every pore For the cats had the power to allow sleep for an hour or four, All this and and plenty more.

Still I lay to be sure, I try not to disturb those ones with fur. Filled with fear of sneak attacks from those who wish on bed mice to snack, So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I kept repeating, “Tis only toes my furry friends and if you bite them you’ll be on the floor, Do it again and you’ll be out the door This is said, and nothing more.”

Presently as they got stronger; hesitating then no longer, “Kitties," said I, I am truly begging you, I implore; But the fact is, I want to be sleeping as you came a leaping, you leaped and pounced and bit my toes all the while that I snored, That you scared me was for sure. “ Here you go out my door,"--- Darkness is out there, and nothing more.

Deep into the darkness peering, long there they stood, never, fearing Doubting that dreams will ever come I wondered will I ever dream like before; But the silence was unbroken, They would give no token, And I wonder as I tried to get some slumber what could they have in store? This I whispered, to them that purrs, Why is this such a chore? Just sleep and nothing more.

Back into my bed they leap settling down they looked to sleep, Soon again I felt the pounce, something harder than before, “Surely,” said I, “surely, this is something that can’t go on." Let me see, that, what what it is that you must explore. Let my heart be still a moment, and maybe my sleep will be restored. "That’s all I ask and nothing more.”

Up I jump, enough is enough. This is the night I really get tough, I search high and low for the villians. As underbreathe I swore, Hours it took or seemed so to me, they have vanished it appears to be. Back to my bed I stumble, Energy to search is no more. Perched upon my bed in slumber, they’re fast asleep all four, What can I say now Nothing more.

At last They have settled in for a long catnip filled dream. I silently slide beneath the sheets so not to disturb their pleasant sleep. I close my eyes and heave a giant sigh. When there comes a shrill scream. "What Ghastly beast is this", I shriek? As quickly I leap to the floor. Tell me it can’t be so! The screaming clock is calling me to wake for my chores. Quoth the kittens, “sleepnomore!”
