Scheduled to be scrapped because of the Washington Naval Disarmament Treaty.

September 1923
Converting into aircraft carrier similar to
AKAGI, which lasted four and a half years.

1928 ~ 1930
Trials have been conducted.

1934
Modernisation. She had a large downward-angled funnel below the edge of the flight deck. As displacement had gone up by 9,000 tons (standard) more powerful machinery had to be installed, with endurance to match, and many of the original faults were eliminated.

April 1941
Flagship of the First Air Fleet. Assigned to CarDiv 1.

November 1941
About 100 special torpedos was shipped for the upcoming Hawaii Operation.

7 December 1941
Operation "KidoButai" - attack on Pearl Harbour.

January 1942
Air strikes against Rabaul and Kavieng.

February 1942
Attempt to intercept the American Carrier Force around the Marshall Islands.

Striked at Palau. Bilges (the flat bottom part of the hull) were damaged by the reef..

Striked at Port Darwin.

Covered the invasion of Java.

March 1942
Striked against Tjilatjap.

4 June 1942
Battle of Midway. Hit by four bombs from Dauntless dive bombers from U.S.S. Enterprise. Blast fractured fuel lines, feeding fuel to the fires already started among the aircraft waiting, fully armed and fuelled. Eventually she blowed up and sank.
