History of Service: 1923 Work started on the hull as a battlecruiser. March 1927 Converted into an aircraft carrier. Assigned as flagship of CarDiv 1. It was a flush-decked ship with two funnels at the starboard edge of the flight deck. It had a triple flight decks. April 1937 Modernisation. With a small island superstructure on the port side and a full-length flight deck. April 1941 Flagship of First Air Fleet. 7 December 1941 Flagship of Nagumo Chuichi. Operation "KidoButai"- attack on Peral Harbor. January 1942 Air strikes against Rabaul and Kavieng. February 1942 Attempt to intercept Amercian Carrier Force around the Marshall Islands area. Attack on Port Darwin with KAGA. Participated in the invasion of Java. 26 March 1942 ~ 23 April 1942 "Operation C" - mission in the Indian Ocean. Striked against the Royal Navy bases at Columbo and Trincomalee, Ceylon. Sunk the light carrier HMS Hermes. 4 June 1942 Battle of Midway. Flagship of Nagumo Chuichi. Launched one strike against Midway Island. Hit by two bombs from American Dauntless dive bombers. One bomb burst in the hangar and started a fire among topedo-warheads which spread to aviation field spilling from fractured lines. A second bomb started a fire among aircraft parked on the flight deck. Eventually the fire was out of control after 30 minutes and she went dead in water. 5 June 1942 Scuttled by the Order of Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku. Hit by three topedoes on her starboard side from their own destoryers. September 1942 Scrapped from the Navy List. |
