An anoynymous person once said, "Until you make peace with who you are, you will never be content with what you have." In this quotation, the anonymous writer explains how people should be happy with themselves or you will never know what your worth is. If you are not happy with yourself then you don't appreciate what you have. This quotation is agreeable because it can be referred back to the novels Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and What Looks Like Crazy......On An Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage.
In the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this quotation strongly reflects Dr. Jekyll. He was not content with himself. He was not happy, so he created Mr. Hyde. Doing this he thought he would be a happier person, but instead Dr. Jekyll became a completely different person. He changed into the opposite of good. He was a very mean, beast-like character. If he had made peace with himself, then he would not have lost his life for being such a fool, a life he never appreciated until it was lost.
In the novel What Looks Like Crazy.....On An Ordinary Day, a reflection to the quotation by an anonymous writer is shown as well. The main character or the protagonist in the book was struggling with being HIV positive. She did not like herself for it. She was scared to tell people because of guilt and fear of rejection. This brought her self-esteem down causing her not to appreciate life. Later on she realizess she is somebody and she becomes "at peace" with herself with the help of a very close friend and her sister. They showed her love and this raised her self-esteem.
Both the works of literature show us the truth behind the statement. Both works show us that you should be more at peace with who you are. It also showed us that your life can be wasted if you don't learn to make peace with yourself. Though in Stevenson's novel the protagonist dies and in Cleage's novel the protagonist lives, they both showed that the quotation had truth within it.
