As thy days so shall thy strength be. These are the words I live by. I'm a seventeen year old senior at Jamaica High School.
I was born in Guyana and grew up in the British Virgin Islands.
I spend most of my time doing volunteer work. Through freshman and sophmore year I spent my afternoon hours at Hillside Manor Nurshing Home with the elderly folks, which actually lead to a few experiences of a lifetime to treasure. Besides having my best friend there with me, which made it even more fun, I found a friendship unlike any other before, with a resident of the nurshing home and even though I am not there anymore I visit her and keep in touch with her to this day. I spend all my holidays (Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving etc.) at the Salvation Army serving lunch and so forth to the homeless. Even though I have heard alot of comments from people, mostly my own age, that I should not be wasting my time doing work without getting paid, I proved them wrong.
Through my involvement with the YMCA, I have been chosen to be a Global Teen. It's a youth program that enables teens to travel inside and outside of America to be a teen ambassador. This summer I will be traveling to Thailand for three weeks with the YMCA. The United Nations came togther with the YMCA on this project and this trip is about educating the people around the world that does not know about their Human Rights. Some of the topics we will be dealing with are, Child Labor, Child Soilders, and allowing children to get an education. Helping others makes me feel good about myself. I am very excited about this trip and I feel blessed to be able to have this oppurtunity to be involved in such a great program.
When I am not doing volunteer services I read or write. I love reading and writing. Some of my favorite books are "Where The Heart is", By Bille Letts,"Here on Earth",, by Alice Hoffman and "Reason For Hope", by Jane Goodall. I love writing poems because they help me express my feelings of who I am. This is one of my favorite that I wrote.
