From:I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings
By:Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou is an inspirational and writer. In her novel "I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings",she uses a lot of descriptive writing and introduces her readers to actually imagine that they were part of the events that occured during her childhood years. When I read this novel, the imagery was so vivid and realistic as if the things that hapened to Ms. Angelou during her youth was put into my life. She was mainly inspired by her grandmother that she could be anything she wants to be and growing up in a society full of hate and predjudice Maya Angelou was often challenged of her ability to succeed.

Maya Angelou makes this statement about childhood and some of the unanswered questions that often linger,"The answer must be experiences shared between the unknowing majority(it)and the knowing minority(you). All of childhood's unanswered questions must finally be passed back to the town and answer there.Heroes and bogey men, values and dislikes, are first encountered and labeled in that environmeny. In later years the change faces, places and maybe races, tactics, intensities and goals, but beneath those penetratable masks they wear forever the stocking-capped faces of childhood"(pg20).

In this general statment she summed childhood and how you can never change what you were meant to be because individually we are all were children at one time, and no matter how much you try to create a change you always search for the unanswered questions of childhhood. In this novel Maya Angelou spoke of how the white people were always first while the blacks were second class and the whites recieved every opportunity to have the best, she describes how "The white women walked on their heels like horses."(pg26) it was because they were proud to be white and showed it gracefully by walking and speaking perfectly, rather than the blacks.

Maya Angelou is very dedicated to her race and by writing a book that explains all of her childhood joys, miseries, and struggle she has influenced people of all ethnic races to stand up for their rights and to be proud of who they are.Although she did not have all the things she wanted as a child, she did accomplish one goal, she finished school and went on to pursue her dreams. And during a time of war, depression, and racism she was never scared as most people would be,also having no parents helped to experience life on a different level. The way she writes it gives the reader an imaginary vision of what she must have been through while growing up.
