THE LAST GOODBYE
A Poem by John Cody
THE MAN
He rushed down to the station before her buss pulled in.
The minutes seemed like hours till he would hold you again.
Then all at once I saw you and I was so proud.
You were all that I ever wanted that heaven allows.
I won’t talk about tomorrow or the plans that we made.
There’s no use in reminiscing if you don’t intend to stay.
So just tell me if you love him and I’ll manage somehow.
I’ll just wish you all the happiness that heaven allows.
THE WOMAN
We’ve tried it for so long now but each day is filled with doubt.
The hurt that’s within you is begging to come out.
The more you pull together the more I tear apart.
I think it’s best as friends we part, before we break each other’s heart.
I’m not sorry that we tried it but it seems it was in vain.
So I’ll give you back your freedom. You give me back my name
