Upon
finishing school, Jason Kay (vocalist, leader and "owner" of the
band) left home after quarrelling with his mother the jazz singer,
Karen Kay. In spite of being homeless, Jay managed to buy a drum
machine and to record a demo in a studio.
Thanks to this demo, Kay singed in a record contract for the British
label Acid Jazz.
Back in 1991 Jay set up for his band, consisting of Stuart Zender
(bass), Toby Smith (keyboards), Wallis Buchannan (didgeridoo) and
Nick Van Gelder (drums).
Jamiroquai's first single, "When you gonna learn?," was welcome
at British dance clubs. And as a result Kay signed an eight-album
deal with Sony Music.
Since their first album, "Emergency on planet Earth," was released
Jamiroquai became a success in its own country. The second release
(TROTSC) was also a fast-seller, but it was the third album the
one that put them under the American spotlights. "Travelling without
moving" gave them the opportunity of winning a Grammy for the single
"Virtual Insanity." With this success Kay insured himself with all
kind of facilities, including a studio (Chillingtone) where the
fourth album, "Synkronized," has been recorded.
