Hobey Baker Winners

Neal Broten 1981
Neal Broten was the first ever recipient of the Hobey Baker award.
While playing for the Gophers, Broten was named the Frank Pond Rookie of the Year for the 1978-79 season. He also scored the game-winning goal in the NCAA Championship game against North Dakota. He was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in 1979. He played on the 1980 U.S. Olympic team and then returned to Minnesota for one more season before going on to play for the North Stars. Broten played for the Stars for 15 seasons (in Minnesota and Dallas) and was then traded to the New Jersey Devils in 1995. Broten has now retired from pro hockey and is currently living in Minnesota and working with the Minnesota Wild franchise. His jersey was recently retired in Dallas.
Broten played on teams that won: a MN State High School Championship (Roseau), an NCAA title (MN 1979),
an olympic gold medal (Lake Placid 1980) and the Stanley Cup (NJ Devils 1995).

Robb Stauber 1988
Stauber was the first goaltender ever to win the award. Played with the Gophers from 1986-89. During that time, he set many single season and career records. He was also received the John Mariucci Most Valuable Player Award in 1988. He was named to the All-WCHA first team and All-American first team in 1989. He was also the WCHA Goaltender of the Year in 1988 and 1989. Stauber was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1986.

Brian Bonin 1996
Brian Bonin played for the Gophers from 1992-96. While at Minnesota Bonin was named first team All-American two years in a row. He was the top scorer in the WCHA in 1995 and 1996. He was also named the WCHA Player of the year in those two seasons. Brian was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pengiuns in 1992.
