Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat can I offer? Is bartering taxable? Are there membership fees? Is there a limit on the amount of barter bucks I can earn or spend? Can anyone join? What if I want to leave? What can I offer? No one has the exact same skills. Everyone has something that they can do that another person may need help with. Do you have a hobby that others may be interested in learning more about, such as gardening, origami, cross-country skiing, or playing an instrument? Do you make really good soup, or always bake more bread than you know what to do with? Do you have room in your car on your daily commute to work? Would you be able to help someone with his or her yardwork or spring-cleaning? Are you a master at throwing fun kids parties? For more ideas of things that you can offer, why not talk to a friend? Often we take the things that we do well for granted, and need some outside perspective to realize how useful our skills might be to somebody else. is bartering taxable? Yes, it is. According to Revenue Canada, if you barter the goods or services that you normally offer professionally, you must pay taxes on the value of those transactions. If you are bartering a good or service that you offer on a casual basis, however, these need not be included in your taxable income. The Revenue Canada publication entitled "IT490 Barter transactions" can be found at http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/E/pub/tp/it490/it490-e.html. Are there membership fees? Yes, there are. Active members are charged three barter bucks a month, in any month in which they do a transaction. Two dollars of this fee go to pay the network administrator, for the upkeep, design, programming and administration of the computer system that keeps our network trading. The other dollar of this fee goes into an administrative account, and will be used to pay for incidentals. Is there a limit on the amount of barter bucks I can earn or spend? Yes, there is. All members limited to a deficit or credit of 200 barter bucks. Can anyone join the Barter Network? Everyone is welcome to join the Fredericton Barter Network. See the section of this page called Become a Member for more details. What if I want to leave? All members must commit to bring their account balance to zero before leaving the system. Leaving when one's balance is in the positive or negative is not good for the smooth functioning of the system, nor is it fair to the other members. If you want to leave, and are unsure about how to bring your account back to zero, contact the network administrator to discuss possible options. |
