November 5: Guy Fawkes Day

Dinar for the Gaius?---Xena

Last night we were hungry for pizza, so at 6:30 I called the place around the corner, made my order, and they said they were busy, it'd probably be 60 minutes. 7:30 came and went. 7:45 came and went. At 7:50 I called to check, and they said ours was next out. 8:00 came and went. He finally got here at 8:10. (Losing $1 off his tip, too, not to mention that it'll be awhile before I use them again: there's a Pizza Hut even closer and anything James Carville has declared war on is a friend of mine.) He's lucky he only lost the dollar, I was so hungry at that point he was in danger of losing his hand if he took any longer.

In the morning, when it's time to put Sailor out, I ask "Want to go out?" and lately Crombie has been getting to the door first. Both kittens enjoy the back yard, and Crombie goes in front sometimes to check it out. She also likes to jump up on the kitchen table and look out that window, a no-no. My Christmas Cactus is doomed. Every day I'm picking up pieces of it and sticking it back into the pot.

It was kind of uncomfortable being a Catholic in England when they were celebrating the defeat of the Papist plot with bonfires and fireworks. I recall one year we were at the monastery of Bury-St-Edmands to a bonfire and came home 30 miles past all the home fires and fireworks. I was amazed more children weren't hurt.

Kevin Wald posted, but I don't know if he's the writer, or just passed on:

Try to remember the Fifth of November,
A day of powder, plot, and treason.
Try to remember the Fifth of November,
When Guy once tried to do MPs in.
Try to remember the Fifth of November:
We'll pass the hat round, because 'tis the season.
Try to remember, and if you remember, put d's in.
 (D's in, d's in, d's in, d's in, d's in . . .)

Now it's November; we'll have to dismember
Some bales of straw, and do some trees in.
Now it's November; we'll use applied chem, bur-
Ning piles of wood with effigies in-
Side. It's November; I'll pick up an ember,
And fire up a bonfire, for just one reason:
As it's November, not June or September, I'm freezin'.
(Freezin', freezin', freezin', freezin', freezin' . . .)

("D", for those who don't know, is the olde designation for olde pre-1971 pennies.)

Apparently the White House regards Vote.com as being similar to dynamiting Parliament. They've blocked all the mail from them. Dick Morris comments "It appears that the Internet Administration is burning the bridge to the twenty-first century!"

I went to see The Straight Story today. This is based on a true 1994 story of a man who went to see his brother, 375 miles away, on a riding lawnmower, towing a homemade trailer. It was a pleasant movie, and I've always loved Richard Farnsworth.
I saw some interesting previews. Flawless stars Robert deNiro, and I thought I saw Alan Richman as the really scary bad guy. The IMDB doesn't agree, though. Still, the really scary bad guy was really yummy.
Another one I will want to see is The Bicentennial Man with Robin Williams as a robot.

Tonight we went to the SAMCC (Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center) open house. The main display was 1800s pictures of Yosemite. There were also displays of the Sac Police Department sesquicentennial, and of "Primping through the years." In the donations received this year were a fax machine from the 20s, a PET computer (I remember these!) and, my favorite, a Victrola with a hand-painted trumpet. There was also our mayor's announcement that he had cancer, and tonight he's in very poor condition. We entered the raffles for a lot of nice things, including some mugs, books, and shirts from the Old City Cemetery. Tickets were 3 for a dollar or your nose to your middle finger worth for $5, so of course we had Rich measure for the tickets! (20).

Oh, and Bernadette is engaged. She won't be getting married for awhile, due to Rob needing to get his degree and their planned move, but she's made it official! I heard her funny tone of voice and thought at first it was bad news.
