07/11/05 The 'Beckham of Istanbul' lives up to his billing By Rob Stewart
There will always be much to live up to when you have been billed as the Maradona of the Bosphorus or even as the David Beckham of Istanbul, but Emre Belozoglu is managing to surpass expectations on Tyneside.

For the second straight Newcastle home game, the Turkish international struck the winning goal. He is adapting to Premiership football through an impressive mixture of skill, industry, combativeness, and evidently an eye for goal.

Emre and Okan
Such qualities earned this stocky left-footed midfielder comparisons with Maradona during his time with Inter Milan and persuaded Newcastle to pay £3.8 million for him last summer.

Emre initially impressed Newcastle while at Inter, helping in their 4-1 Champions League victory at St James' Park three years ago.

Before joining Newcastle, he had been used to Champions League football, but this season he is having to watch it on television for the first time in his career. He is optimistic, though, that Newcastle can return - and so far his own contribution would seem to support that prediction.

"For each of the last nine years - five with Galatasaray and four with Inter - I have been with a club in the Champions League and this is the first time I have not been in it," said Emre. "But I know what is needed. I know we have the players good enough to get into the Champions League and I really believe we can make it this season."

Newcastle have now recorded three consecutive victories thanks to Emre's long-distance strike through a crowded penalty area in the 78th minute. The shot deceived Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor, who had to that point been under-employed as his team threatened a win themselves.

"It's not surprising that Emre is known as Istanbul's David Beckham because I know he the biggest star in Turkish football," said Newcastle manager Graeme Souness. "He can't walk down any street in Turkey without getting mobbed. He is the equivalent of what David Beckham is here."

"When games are tight like this you expect one of your special players to make the difference and thankfully that's what happened. It's early yet but I think there's a lot more to come from Emre. He's already one of our star players but he's only young and will get better," said Souness, who also announced Alan Shearer would undergo hernia surgery in Munich today.

Before Emre's intervention, Jiri Jarosik had struck a post from distance and Matthew Upson had glanced an excellent opportunity wide before Taylor's second costly mistake in successive games.

"I am not the type of manager to ever publicly criticise a player but that was a howler," said Birmingham manager Steve Bruce. "He should have been saving that comfortably."

Birmingham remain second from bottom after their eighth league game without a win, but Bruce is sure the club can stay in the Premiership beyond this season.

"I can't see another bottom-of-the-table team coming here and dominating Newcastle like that," said Bruce.

"The best team lost. We'll just have to keep grinding away but I'm convinced we'll be okay. That was the sixth or seventh time we've lost by the odd goal, which shows there's a fine divide between success and failure."

01/07/05 Emre Joins Newcastle United!
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Turkey international midfielder Emre Belozoglu from Internazionale, for a fee reported to be around the £4million mark.
The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at St James' Park and is looking forward to testing himself in English football.

EMRE "I am very happy to have signed for Newcastle United because they are one of the biggest clubs in England," Emre told the club's official website. "This is a very big club and I am so excited about the prospect of playing in the Premiership. It is a new challenge and one I am looking forward to very much. "I would like to thank the manager Graeme Souness and chairman Freddy Shepherd for having the trust in me to bring me to Newcastle. "Now I will give my very best for Newcastle and try to bring success to the club."

25/05/04 Turkey Triumphs over Australia
Turkey have won both friendly matches against Australia in Sydney and Melbourne over the weekend. Emre played about 85 mins of the first match, which Turkey comfortably won 3-1. Turkey held on to win 1-0 on Monday night without Emre's support. (I have taken plenty of photos of Emre - they will be posted soon! )

16/05/04 Emre coming to Australia
Get ready Australian fans... Emre and a full-strength Turkish squad will be coming to Australia this week to play two friendly matches in Sydney and Melbourne!!

8/06/03 Turkey back on Top!
Turkey are back on top of the Uefa qualifying group 7 after a 1-0 win over Slovakia last night. The single goal was scored by Nihat.

25/05/03 Emre wins Award
Emre's second goal that he scored against lazio last December has been voted best goal of the season. (see picture- bottom left of the front page of this site) Well done Emre!

Emre is hugged by Cuper after last night's loss...

14/05/03 Inter vs Milan 1-1
Due to the away goal rule, Milan go through to the finals of the champions league. Congratulations to Milan, condolences to Inter, who played well.

9/05/03 Champions League Semi - Milan vs Inter 0-0
Milan and Inter played out a 0-0 draw in Wednesday night's Champions League semi-final first leg in front of a capacity crowd at the San Siro. Emre played quite well, and was very envolved throughout the game.
Next week, of course, is the decider as to which team goes through to play in the final in England on May 28th. It will certainly be an exciting match!

*ATTENTION AUSTRALIAN FANS* SBS will be showing both of the next two semi-final matches live next week. Inter's match will kick off at 6.30am AEST on Wednesday, with the Juve-Real match at 6.30 on Thursday. Set your alarm clocks to get up early! The final will also be shown live, with coverage starting from 4am (eek! or maybe it's 5am?!?!) Watch this space for updates!!!

4/05/03 Turkey friendly results and other news
Emre sat on the bench earlier this week while his Turkish National team recorded a shock 4-0 loss in their friendly match.
In other news, Inter's 2nd draw in two weeks has ruled them out of winning the scudetto. Thankfully, they still have the Champions League semi finals to play, hoping for a spot in the finals. (Australian viewers - this week's match will be shown on Thurs 8/5 at 10pm on SBS. The following week both of the semi's will be shown live at 6.30am on the 14th and 15th respectively, with a full repeat of each match at 10pm that evening).

28/04/03 Inter v Lazio - 1-1 draw
This is what Emre had to say about last night's disappointing draw against Lazio. With only 4 rounds to play, it looks as if it will be even harder for Inter to catch up to Juve and take the scudetto. (Good news, of course for those of you who remeber Emre's comments of marrying his girlfriend if they won the Scudetto!!)

"We played quite well in the first half, while after the restart we didn't manage to continue like we had done in the first forty-five minutes. I'm disappointed because there are just four matches left and it's all the more difficult now. At the end I was angry with Collina - who in my opinion refereed well - because I didn't touch Castroman and he gave a foul against me. Now we're concentrating on Atalanta."

22/04/03 Soccerage.com's comments about emre (8/4)
You may or may not remember that I seriously dissed soccerage.com a few weeks ago for their terrible reporting of the Turkey Vs England Euro match.. Well I feel they may have redeemed themselves with the following comments about Emre, reported before their last match against Valencia:

WHO'S HOT-WHO'S NOT
INTER: Despite Vieri, Recoba and Zanetti all being in fine form, Inter's best player at the moment has to be the sensational young Turk, Emre Belozoglu. The kid is joy to watch and anyone who disagrees with the fact that he is one of the best midfielders in Europe at the moment is a fool.

16/04/03 Emre's Latest Car
Emre has recently purchased another new car. A porche Cayenne.

10/04/03 Inter vs Valencia - Emre's comments
This is what Emre had to say about Wednesday's match against Valencia:

"I'm very disappointed about the red card. The Valencia player kicked me while I was on the ground and I reacted, but I didn't put my hands on him, I used my chest. I'm very sorry for having put my team-mates in difficulty, but we're all aware of our strengths and we'll go to Valencia to get through the round. You give and take blows on the pitch, but when you're playing and not when you're on the ground. We're all highly motivated for the derby. We want to win Saturday's match at all costs."

10/04/03 Inter vs Valencia
Inter managed to pull off a great win at the San Siro last night against Valencia, moving them another step forward to the Champions League finals! Vieri scored Inter's only goal. Unfortunately, in the 57th minute Emre retaliated on a challenge from Albelda and both players are sent off.

08/04/03 Emre buys a new car!
Last month, Emre bought a new car - a YELLOW Mini Cooper!

07/04/03 Cuper regrets taking off Emre
This is what Hector Cuper had to say about Inter's shock loss against Roma. After Emre was substituted in the 81st minute, Roma came from behind and scored two goals to level the match, which now puts Juventus 5 points ahead of Inter. This is what Cuper had to say:
"Perhaps I made a mistake in substituting Emre, but he had played ninety minutes with the Turkish national team and I thought he was fatigued. "

07/04/03 Inter vs Roma 3-3 Emre scores goal
Emre scored Inter's third goal (77th minute) at the San Siro last night, and in doing so made Inter's goal tally reach 3850 in 71 Serie A matches. Emre was taken off by Cuper in the 81st minute, and got a standing ovation from the crowd.

Post match comments from Emre:
"It was a match we played very well and that we deserved to win. The 3-3 draw penalises us. Now Juve have a five-point lead but we mustn't give up. We have to hope they make a few false steps. We have a very important match on Wednesday so we have to look ahead."

07/04/03 England vs Turkey - Emre's comments...
A quote from Emre (found by Renee - thankyou! - unsure of the original source)

"Turkish midfielder Emre Belozoglu fails to see the funny side of David Beckham blowing kissing after the England game last week. 'He disrespected us and sent us a kiss, but we will make sure he ends up kissing a certain part of our bodies when he comes here. But my advice to him would be not to come at all for his own safety,' he added."

05/04/03 Back at training
The day after Turkey's disappointing loss to England, Emre and Okan were back in Milan training for Inter's next match.

03/04/03 TV Interview with Emre
(Thanks Yagmur!)

Q: how it is going with love?
A:now i have regular relationship!

Q:is she a turk?
A:Yes she is

Q:where does she live?
A: oh, no that is too private..anywhere in Turkey!!
(Then Emre, Okan and the reporter played on the PlayStation2 and Emre won)

03/04/03 Turkey lose 0-2 to England...
Turkey are now ranked number 2 after a disappointing defeat by england at the Stadium of Light last night. The game was scoreless until the 75th minute when Vassell scored the first goal. Beckham (who might I add played terribly the whole match) scored from a penalty in injury time. The Turkish team played exceptionally well, despite the difficult game. Nihat and Rustu were certainly the standout players, along with Emre of course, who although came close to a red card on several occasions, did well to hold his temper. (Though I would have liked to have seen him take out Beckham)

May I suggest that everyone boycott the site www.soccerage.com after their incredibly one-sided review of the match. They managed to mention every one of the English players (and droned on about that Rooney guy) but as far as the turkish team, only mentioned Rustu, and only once. (They actually referred to them as 'a turkish defender..' 'a turkish arm..')

Turkey still have a chance to get back on top of Group seven, with the next match being played in Turkey in October. Let's hope they kick some english butt!

(Please don't send me emails saying I'm biased... Believe it or not my parents are actually English!)

02/04/03 Lead up to Turkey Vs England...
Soccerage.com have named Emre as Turkey's 'Player to Watch' in tonight's game:
Turkey: Emre - The Inter Milan midfielder is in excellent form and currently one of the best players in Europe. The 22-year-old mixes supreme skill with a determined style of play, while he has a deadly left foot that England should fear. He is just one of a number of stars in Gunes' side...

...And as reported on the uefa.com website, this is what Emre had to say:
Internazionale FC midfield player Emre Belözoglu is also looking to confirm his nation's recent ascendancy. "For the first time in history we are facing England knowing that we can go there and play an open game," he said. "In contrast to previous games the result is difficult to predict. We are convinced that we can overcome England, even in their own back yard."

Good luck and best wishes to Emre and the Milli Takim - and may the best team win!

26/03/03 Emre Wins Award
Emre received an award from Zaman newspaper in Turkey yesterday for the 'most successful soccer-player of the year!' His award was given to him by his hero, and close friend, Hagi.

23/03/03 Emre in doubt for Undinese match
After sustaining a slight injury at training, Emre has been cleared to go with the rest of the team for this weeks match against Udinese, however, he has passed his medical test, but will undergo a fitness test tomorrow to ensure he is 100% ok to play. This is what Cuper said:
Emre hurt muscles during today's training session. He'll undergo medical examinations this afternoon, then we'll decide. However, I'm not very optimistic about the possibilities of calling him up.

20/03/03 Inter vs B.Leverkusen 2-0!!! Emre scores goal!!
Inter are through to the next round of the Champions league after a fabulous win against Bayer Leverkusen last night. Inter's to goals were scored by Marints (36th minute) and Emre, in the 90th minute.
This is what Emre had to say about it:
The Turkish international commented, "My goal came a bit late but was was an important goal. We're very pleased and now we await the draw for the next round. I don't have any preferences for the draw. Milan, Manchester United and Valencia are great sides, but we are Inter."

Inter will be drawn against AC Milan, Manchester United or Valencia. (the draw takes place on Friday)

12/03/03 Inter vs Newcastle 2-2
Inter have drawn their match against Newcastle 2-2, and it will take a similar result in their match against Barcelona to ensure their spot in the next round of the Champion's league. This is what Emre (who played much of the match) had to say about it.

"It was a battle like in Bologna . We played much better than on Saturday. We do better when we keep ball possession, like we did in the second half. I'm sorry I didn't put that ball into the net in the first half, perhaps the match might have gone differently. There won't even be Vieri in Leverkusen. I'll play where the boss asks me to. There are no problems, we'll all make sacrifices in order to win."

11/03/03 Latest comments from Emre!
First of all, how are you feeling?
Well. I was a bit tired last night, but it's nothing serious. I slept on it and things are going decidedly better. There shouldn't be any problems for Tuesday because I'm disqualified for next Sunday's match.

It was a very difficult match against Bologna , but you won it in the end...
On these occasions Inter show they are a great team. Even when we're not playing at our best we have the strength to find the winning blows. There are exceptional players in this Inter side. When we don't play at our best we win, but when we play well we're frightening.

You faced a ten-man Bologna . Having numerical superiority doesn't always guarantee you an advantage...
They played well both with eleven and ten men. Then, as the match goes on, you feel the absence of a man. It was difficult for us, but luckily we won in the end.

Yesterday's win was very important for the team...
It was an extremely important victory. Now we have to play a great match against Newcastle. This is the most important match for us at the moment because even if we had lost yesterday it wouldn't have been anything serious. We play our Champions League future on Tuesday.

It will be a difficult match against an in-form side...
On Tuesday we have to win at all costs. They're in excellent form, but we'll have to make the home advantage count.

What's the key to winning the match?
We'll have to pay great attention in defence. We'll need to be calm and patient. The match will last for ninety minutes.

It's Inter's 95th birthday today...
I'm pleased to celebrate Inter's birthday. Inter are a great club with a great history and a great present. I want to celebrate lots of Inter birthdays and celebrate them with great victories.

09/03/03 Inter back on top!
Inter are back on top of the Serie A table today with a great win over Bologna. Recoba managed to win the match for Inter with his two goals against Bologna's one. Emre played well, and was on the pitch for 66 minutes. Bologna's Nervo commited a terrible foul on Emre in the 18th minute and was given a red card. Emre seems not to have been injured.

06/03/03 Emre talks to the Inter Channel
APPIANO GENTILE - Emre made his return to first-team action against Juventus at the Delle Alpi, just about the only piece of good news from Sunday's match.
In an interview with Inter Channel, the Turkish midfielder spoke about his state of fitness. "I was fairly well on Sunday even though I hadn't done many training sessions with my team-mates," he said. "I thank the boss for his trust. I'm working well now and I will definitely be better for Saturday. We've lost two important matches and we know this is a delicate moment. We need two victories on Saturday and Tuesday."

03/03/03 Inter lose to Juve 0-3
Another incredibly disappointing loss for the Nerazzuri last night, going down to Juvenus, 3-0. However, it was good to see that Emre was back on the pitch and managed to play a whole game without a problem. Juve's Camoranesi was given a yellow card in the 85th minute for elbowing Emre in the face.

2/3/03 Emre in Cuper's 18 man squad
As I reported earlier this week, Emre has been named by Cuper in the Squad to play against Juventus tonight.

28/02/30 Emre participates in practice match
Emre has been back training and playing some practice matches with the rest of the team. By the look of the photos, he doesnt seem to be in any pain, so hopefully he will be back on Sunday for the big match against Juve!

27/02/03 Inter vs Barca 0-0
After another tough, Emre-less game, inter managed to hold Barcelona to a 0-0 draw in their champions league match at the San Siro last night. Inter are still in second place on the Group A table, one point against Newcastle. They need to beat Newcastle in their next match in two week's time in Milan to ensure they go directly into the next round...

26/02/03 Emre Back at Training
It was great to see Emre back out on the pitch at Appiano Gentile today doing some light training. He managed to complete a 30 minute training session including runs and ball practise. Hope to see him back in some matches soon!

19/02/03 Inter Vs Barcelona Shock
Inter have lost their first group A champions league match 0-3 to Barcelona. With such players as Emre and Crespo missing from the line-up, as well as having Recoba sent off, it was a terribly disappointing game for Inter. Let's hope they can make up for it in a week's time when Inter play Barca at home at the San Siro.

16/02/03 Inter's loss to Chievo
In a difficult game at the Bentegodi stadium, Inter had a surprising loss 2-1 to Chievo. In a game that was loaded with fouls, Okan was (inexplicably!) sent off in the 33rd minute, and Chievo's Corini is sent off in the 94th minute. Emre, obviously, did not play due to his injury sustained in last week's match against Reggina.

08/02/03 Surgery not required
Inter have reported that Emre has suffered a capsule ligament injury to the external compartment of the left ankle. Surgery has been ruled out, but he will undergo specific therapy to recover from the injury.

8/02/03 Inter vs Reggina 3-0 But Emre injured
Inter played well and secured another 3 valuable points with their win at home against Reggina. Unfortunately, Emre injured his left ankle after a challenge by Vargas. He was taken from the field in the 64th minute. It appears that he has suffered a sprain and is having pain in the posterior external compartment of his leg. It is currently being treated with a pressure bandage. No news whether or not he will be ready for the Turkish friendly against the Ukraine on 12/02.
*UPDATE* Emre was just shown on the news walking on crutches.

07/02/03 Emre Speaks to Inter Channel...
APPIANO GENTILE - Turkish players have been in the spotlight this week. Okan scored his second goal for Inter against Torino on Sunday, while Emre was indefatigable in midfield. There has also been talk of Hasan Sas, a player Emre knows well, coming to Italy.

"He's very good and he's also an excellent person," said Emre to Inter Channel. "I think there are at least three players in Turkey that are good enough for the Italian championship. But myself and Okan are just thinking about Inter."

Emre expressed his strong desire for victory this Sunday. "It will be difficult against Reggina because they are in great form. But if we want to win the Scudetto, we can only focus on getting three points."

After the splendid brace against Lazio at the Olimpico, the Nerazzurri faithful are awaiting the Turkish wizard's first goal at the San Siro. "Yes, but I want to win the Scudetto more than anything else. Then perhaps also a goal..."

03/02/03 Inter vs Torino 2-0!
Congratulations to Inter for their 2-0 win over Torino away in Turin last night. Vieri scored the first, and well done to Okan who scored the other Inter goal. Emre played up until the 92nd minute when Beatie was substituted (poor Beatie only played for one minute) This is what Emre had to say about the match:

"We're pleased. These were three important points and we managed to get them. Good. They [the fans] have always been with me and this pleases me immensely. Thanks to everyone."

27/01/03 Inter vs Empoli 3-0!
Inter managed a great win over Empoli after there shock loss last round. Vieri, back from injury, scored all three goals, two of which can a minute after the other. Emre played well and opened up a number of opportunities for goals. It was also good to see Okan back on the pitch - he was subbed on in the 60th minute.

16/01/03 Emre's Press Conference
Latest press conference with Emre. This is what he had to say...

With Crespo out through injury, do you think you can play as a second striker?
The important thing is to play. If doesn't matter whether on the right, on the left, up front or behind. Crespo 's absence is a problem for us.

Is it a coincidence that Inter's game has improved with you in the team?
You shouldn't ask this question. You can say it, or you can ask the coach.

You have a point more with respect to the halfway stage last season and you still have another game to play. What has improved?
Our team is made up of a very united group. It's the second year we're together and the bond has become stronger. And not just among the players, but also with the club.

Do you feel like a new player at the club?
Not at all. I've already been here for two years.

How have you all lived through the controversy of recent days? Have you spoken about it?
Yes, we have spoken about it. But it's not an important thing. On the contrary, we have joked about it...

Is it hot in the rooms?
I don't know. For me, the temperature is fine.

How have you lived through the Crespo drama?
Hernan is a very important player for us, but it can't be a reason for the team to be in crisis. For sure, there's great disappointment.

Another Crespo would be useful...
Obviously, I think so.

Is the pitch at the San Siro in bad condition?
It's a bit better than before. But when it's cold it's very difficult to play on that surface.

Are you confident of winning the title of 'winter champions'?
It's important to be first at the end. It could help us psychologically [to be 'winter champions'], but what counts is just being first at the end.

What do you think you have improved with respect to last season?
I'm much better physically, but, above all, from the psychological point of view.

Perugia?
It's a difficult pitch, there's a hard surface there. But we will try to win in order to keep pace with Milan.

Do Milan have something extra?
They have a lot of class players, but we also have a lot of class players. What counts is only finishing the championship ahead of everyone else.

You have literally exploded this season. But Dalmat still hasn't. Why not?
A player can't always perform to the same levels. Apart from Javier Zanetti. He's impressive. Stephane is very young and so it's natural for him to have ups and downs. He's very good and he's also a very good boy. I want to play with Steph more. At the moment he still has a few physical problems but he will soon return to training with us.

You've also improved in terms of your character. Are you calmer?
To feel the support of the people, the fans, the press and every other external aspect helps me tremendously. I'm like this, the people are beginning to understand me now. But I believe I'm always the same, both on the pitch and off it.

Did you feel less affection last year?
No, I felt trust. I didn't always play, while now I'm playing more. The loss of Crespo is serious. Do you need to operate on the transfer market?
Last year we only played with Vieri and Ronaldo in the last three months. Now, Recoba , Kallon and soon also Ventola can play with Vieri . We have alternatives, if another player arrives then that's fine. But I think the strikers that are already here are enough.

There are are lot of promising young players in Turkey. What's the situation?
Football is growing. Since the World Cup, more attention is being paid. In the Under-21 side there are two or three very good youngsters that came to play against Italy. The important thing for Turkish players is to understand what to do after they turn twenty-one. I think it's fundamental to go and play in Europe.

Five months on, has Ronaldo apologised for the declarations he made?
It wasn't something to apologise for. We spent some good times together. And also, I never heard those things from him.

10/01/03 Inter vs Modena 2-0
In their first game back for the new year, Inter kicked some Modena butt by scoring the two winning goals in the first half. Emre played well and is currently ranked the highest in the match centre on inter.it.
oh, and this is what Moratti had to say about Emre's performance: "And also Emre , who has great vivacity but who also showed personality by taking charge of the team."

10/01/03 Emre is Engaged!!
Sorry guys - it seems that it's true. Emre is Engaged to his Turkish girlfriend. He has made a comment that if Inter win the Scudetto, he will marry her.

09/01/03 training
Emre jogging and training in the snow today at the pinetina. Check out the photos on inter.it/en

07/01/03 Back at training
Emre was back at training today. There are quite a lot of new photos of him jogging around the Pinetina. To see them, check out Emre's photo gallery... Click here to launch. He looks really cold! (and is that a mobile phone that he is jogging with???)
