Marine Biology Field Study
Golden Gardens - May 20, 2004

I used to know the name of this thing, but I forgot. Mr. Hauk said it was a luminescent something-or-other. In any case, this is awesome. It looks like oil. Great defense for a modern-day era of oil spillage and global pollution, huh?

This is the weirdest thing I saw all day. It's a "sea pen", a cnidarian like a jellyfish, but not. It's a medusa so it moves around. It kind of looks likea combination of the two body parts that many males cannot balance equally. *g*

Little sea anemones. :P

I've never seen so many herons in my life. Pathetic, I know, but I had to take a picture.

At first I thought this was pollution, like some strange grey styrofoam pot that washed ashore, but Mr. Hauk informed us that it's actually a "sand collar" -- it's the 'nest' of a giant sea snail thing. That is basically molded sand, eggs, and mucus. Blech!

I forgot what I was taking a picture of, but this glowing green thing looks like a woman's face. Doesn't it? I'll call these two "Face of the Naiad". Maybe it is the face of a Naiad. :P

Beats me how a Flounder got about, but this is a baby Flounder in an unnatural habitat (it's true habitat is the sand, note how it looks just like the sand around here)... They're weird.

I took this just for symbolism. The seaweed congregating below and gradually spreading out to the pristine ocean kind of looks like the encroaching darkness taking over the purity of the water. I liked this.

Different animals of the same species. All I know is that they spit. Lots.

These are Turkish Rugs. The latter picture is the root(?) of it, I think. It looked like some crab-fairy, to me.

I liked this. It's like the spawning-shell of a mermaid after she broke free and swam out to sea. It's just pretty. And I'm a dork.

This is Turner, Turner's bloody hand, Turner's snipped pen, and a fiesty crab. There was a crab under some rocks, and him and some other kids were trying to pry the crab out from under a rock. He used his pen to lure the crab out, only in vain; the crab kept chopping bits of the pen off. Eventually, somehow, they got it out, but it took a swipe at his hand. Here are the results.

A sea anemone of sorts. A red and green one. It reminds me of candy and Christmas.

This was a little eel. I could only take a picture in Mr. Hauk's hands or else he would have slithered away under a rock. It was cute. There are lots of baby animals out this time of year...

More scenery. I thought the rocks were pretty and I just love the landscape of Washington. I particularly like the last picture--the way the portions of the picture are split is pretty nice.
