BOOK REVIEW GUIDELINES
Think about the book. What is its dominant theme? What aspect of the book particularly interests you? A book critique's main goal is to present your viewpoint on what you've read. Your comments, reaction, and use of quotes to support your ideas comprise the elements of critiques.
Essay paragraphs are 5 - 8 sentences. Newspaper paragraphs are 1 or 2 sentences.
1) Take notes. The more notes you take the more material you have for your essay.
2) Be alert for interesting, perplexing quotes from the book to use in your essay.
3) What aspect of the book do you find interesting?
4) Why does this aspect interest you - language, style, theme, content?
WRITING your book critique.
Paragraph 1: Introduction the book's title and author. 3-sentence summary. i-sentence overall opinion of the book and its most interesting aspect.
Paragraph 2: Your opinion of the book in slightly different wording and at least two quotes from the book to explain or support your opinion.
Paragraph 3: 3 sentences the particular aspect of the book that interested you most. Quote the book to explain that aspect. State your viewpoint regarding this aspect.
Paragraph 4: The book's theme, your opinion of it, and your viewpoint of the particular aspect. Answer the question SO WHAT?
Paragraph 5: Conclusion. Transition sentence, summarize your main points, restate your thesis. End with a strong, clinching, concluding sentence.
