The bright and sunshiny evening of May 1, A.D. 1907 when all life seems to be gay, the news rang out upon the cool breezes in our area, proclaiming the death of one of our eldest citizens which occured while he was eating dinner, being brought about by that awful disease called heart disease. The deceased, Louis Hicks, was born in Hicks Branch in Hardin county, Illinois Dec 16 A.D. 1832. He was united in matrimony to Miss Margaret Patton Mar. 27 th., 1856 of which 5 children belssed their union, there being 4 boys and 1 girl, of which all passed away while in their infantile state excepting one, Mrs Sarah Ferrell, who still survives. Mrs. Hicks joined her 4 little ones in Paradise Oct. 15th. A.D. 1865. On Aug 5th. A.D. 1868, Uncle Louis was again united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Miss Mary Johnson, of which 10 children blessed their union, there being 8 boys and 2 girls as follows: Charley, Ben, Marion, Henry, Milo, Fannie, and Loy all of whom are now living excepting Marion who passed away Oct. 19th. 1894, being 19 years of age. Uncle Lewis professed faith in Christ about the year A.D. 1851. He was united with the General Baptaist church and lived a strict christian life until death took him away. He was 74 years 4 months and 15 days old. He was afflicted with blindness most of his life and confined to his home for about 5 years previous to his death, but bore his afflictions with patience unto the end of the race, always trusting in God for guidance of his spirit and eternal life in the blest world to come. He was held with the highest esteem by all his friends (who were many) and his character in general is beyond reproach. He leaves one brother, Milas Hicks, of Hicks, Illinois and two sisters Mrs James Carlisle and Mrs. Richard Binum of Rosiclare and a companion besides his children to mourn his departure, left the evidence behind that he was ready to go. So dear friends our loss is his eternal gain, and let us so live that when the summon comes we can answer and say that we are ready to go and then it will be that we will meet with all the redeemed of earth and rejoice around that eternal throne of God wlhere parting will be no more. Obituary for William R. Ledbetter
William R. Ledbetter, 3rd son and 7th child of the late John T. Ledbetter, by his first wife, died at Marion, IL. Nov. 16, 1909, after a brief illness of maleria hemituria. He was born in this county Feb. 15, 1880 and lived here until about grown. Went to Halcomb, MO. some 10-12 years ago. Taught school a while, was cashier in a bank there and later engaged in the insurance business. Two of his brothers, James and Herbert, live in Marion and for that reason, perhaps, he was induced to locate there a year or so ago, where he has since worked very successdfully in the insurance business, having laid the foundation for a substantial fortune. He owned a farm in Missouri and had a policy on his life for $5,000 which added to the notes and money he had, leaves his family in comparatively easy circumstances. He belonged to a family of 9 children. All of whom survive him, and all attended his funeral but his oldest sister, Mrs. Kate White, who lives in Arkansas. He was large and portly, possessed a rare business trait and had an exceedingly bright future. Standing thus at the zenith of his work and in the prime of life, the fell destroyer came. When the sun of his life shone brightest it paled suddenly and disappeared forever. When death comes to the old and decrepit it seems natural, and we can easily reconcile ourselves to such a loss, but when it comes to those who are in the meridian of life and in the very acme of their usefulness, it is hard for frail humanity to exclaim "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." Deceased was a nephew of Rev. D.A. Ledbetter and wife, Rev. John Thornton and wife, J.L. Lowry and wife and the writer, of this county, besides these and many other relatives here and elsewhere. He leaves a wife and three children, four brothers and four sisters to mourn his untimely death. Peace to his ashes. Written by John Allen Oxford Taken from the Hardin County Independent
