OPAL DENTON SHOT SELF LATE SUNDAY- HAD THREATENED SUICIDE OFTEN, FAMILY SAID
Mrs. Ted Denton, age 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barnard - owners of the roadhouse near Beaver Creek, Gallatin Co., shot and killed herself Sunday night.
With her husband and a party of friends, Mrs. Denton had spent Sunday evening at Mullen's bar boat, on the river at Shawneetown. They returned home after midnight.
According to her husband, when they arrived home Sunday evening, he said "Wait and I'll light the lamp". She said "I won't need any light", and shot herself through the chest.
Mr. Denton picked her up and carried her to the nearby farm home of her sister, Mrs. Floyd Barnes. Mrs. Denton lived until her father arrived there. Her father had been at the tavern when the tragedy occurred. Mr. and Mrs. Denton made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barnard, whose house is near the roadhouse, and Mrs. Denton worked in her father's tavern.
At the coroner's inquest held at Shawneetown on Monday afternoon, it was decided that she came to her death from a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
Funeral services for Mrs. Denton were held at Peter's Creek, Tuesday afternoon, with burial there.
Ted Denton is the son of Walter Denton near Rock Creek. The deceased, Opal Barnard Denton, was the grand daughter of Kate Barnard, who lives with her daughter, Mrs. Mollie Holbrook, near the Methodist church in Elizabethtown. Mrs. Kate Barnard celebrated her 87th birthday last month. Her daughter married her own 1st cousin, Jack Barnard.
There have been a number of tragedies in the life of Mrs. Kate Barnard and Mrs. Holbrook. Jack Barnard's brother, Brittain Barnard, and his sister, Alpha Barnard, both committed suicide. Mrs. Holbrook's nephew, Frank, was shot and killed by Elmer Jones last april at Cave-In-Rock.
In commenting on Mrs. Denton's death, Mrs. Holbrook said that Opal had always threatened to kill herself, from the time she was a small child. She said when Opal would become angry, she would say that she was going to kill herself, and that Opal owned a revolver to carry at night when she went from the roadhouse home.Taken from the Hardin County Independent 10 September 1936
