OXFORD hannah [Parents] was born 8 Aug 1831 in burke co., NC. She died 9 Jan 1916 in hardin co., IL. She was buried in angleton-patton, hardin co., IL. She married PATTON samuel s. 1850.

The death of Aunt Hannah Patton last Sunday morning January 9, 1916 at the advanced age of 86 years removes from earth the last of the old family of Oxford's in this county of which she was the youngest member. She came to this county from North Carolina when she was a small child. Her parents settled in near Potts Hill, the Eastern part of the county, where they resided until they died. The family consisted of the six boys and two girls of all whom grew to man-hood and woman-hood and raised families. She was married to Samuel S. Patton, the youngest child of another sturdy family. Eight children were born to them, four boys and four girls. The oldest daughter who died many years ago was the mother of William Denton, Shawneetown and James E. Denton of Elizabethtown, IL. But threee of her children survive her. Rebecca Sutton, of near Sikeston, Mo., Mrs Sarah Carr, of near Yellow Springs, and Grant Patton of near Saline Creek. She was 86 last August 8th., and had been quite feeble for the last five years and while the grippe probably was the immediate cause of death, the physical structure which had supported her once strong and powerful physique for 86 years had been gradually yielding to the disturbing chemistries of failing life until the Good Lord said "Enough, Come up a little Higher" and thus ended a long and useful life which her children and grandchildren and other relatives would do well to emulate. Relatives and friends of this grand old sainted mother should not grieve over her timely dismiss, but rather adopt the language of the son of the late Dwight L. Moody, at his father's funeral who declared that they had met to celebrate a victory and not a defeat and so my we say of Aunt Hannah's death. It was a victory of the many sorrows, disappointments and other ills of to which human flesh is err. The deceased professed a friendship and love for the writer akin to that felt by his own mother and he therefore feels that one of the brightest friendships of his whole life has gone out forever. Remains were taken to the Yellow Springs church house a few hundred yards away where an appropriate funeral srevice was conducted by Re. Jonas Spivey and Millard Oxford to a large crowd of sympathizing mourners and thence to Angleton Cemetery where all her children were buried, where it found a last resting place beside her husband who has preceded her to the spirit land some 50 years ago. Peace and rest to the soul of this good wife and mother.

TO ARTHUR
Ten thousand times, ten thousand times,
He passed and passed again;
He walked when sun was blistering hot
Nor minded he the rain
I hear him still, just after dark,
With firm and rapid tread;
Two miles held ____ before the lark
Too ere he went to bed.

Peculiar was this son of earth
A different sort was he;
No chum he had in any man
Nor none an enemy
A sensitive and artistic man
With mind of mastery;
His thoughts pertained to bigger things,
From foolish slush kept free.

That brother mine! Though pals we were
We would often disagree;
I am sorry now-he's gone away
He meant a lot to me
He rests among familiar scenes
Hes' gathered to his God,
His lowly bed lies close to home
Beneath the ground he trod.

CAVE-IN-ROCK
On the Ohio River,
Beyond route thirty four,
Lies the quaintest little village
Of a hundred years or more.

It has a natural beauty
And an ancient history too
Of pirates stealing booty
From the flatboats passing through.

Grand mother told me the story
A dozen times or so
When pirates in a dory
Searched the river high and low.

When her father from Virginia came
In eighteen hundred four
This country was a wilderness
With Indians by the score.

There was no Hardin County then,
This beautiful country here
Was overrun by animals
The wild cat, bear and deer.

Her father learned the Indian lore
And to imitate their yell
When there was trouble brewing
The signs he knew full well.

Many were his adventures
As he hunted dale and hill,
The stories of his encounters
Of course a book would fill.

When old Grandad grew older
He felt the duty call
To take a flat boat of potatoes
To Louisiana every fall.

That was their transportation means
Before the days of steam
And men progressed in spite of all
So crudely it may seem.

They knew the pirate's headquarters
Was in the Cave-hole then
But their boats were strong and sturdy
And manned by muscled men.

He told how they guarded
Their cargoes all along
And for the sake of "Safety First"
The "Flintlock" went along.

They dreaded those murderous outlaws
Much more than Rock and shale,
They knew the pirates slogan
"Dead men tell no tales".

If they passed the Cave in darkness,
They extinguished every light
For many a random bullet
Was fired into the night.

For outlaws were without mercy
They cared not for life nor soul,
Their hearts in sinful greediness
Was centered on their goal.

Many a strong and noble man
Was forced to "Walk the Plank"
The cargo they always pillaged
And then the vessels sank.

The "Cave-hole" really harbored
Some pirates bold and bad
According to the story
Of my old Great Grandad.

To look at its rustic beauty,
In summer, spring or fall
You would doubt it harbored booty
or was once a pirates' hall.

Could it only voice its secrets
That its upper chamber holds'
Who knows, but what the booty
Within its bosom molds.
