Missouri didn't become a territory until 1812. It wasn't until 1815 that
the Treaty was signed with the Indians. In 1820, Hugh and Elizabeth
moved to Lawrence County, Arkansas, (later Independence Co.) where Hugh
became one of the first members of the Arkansas State Legislature. He
also petitioned for, and got, one of the first, if not THE first, mail
routes in Arkansas. It was probably while serving on the State
Legislature that he met Maj. Jake Wolf, whose daughter, Amanda, married

1. Azariah Tinnin b. 1816 was a very active Mason and helped established the first
Masonic Lodge west of the Mississippi. The Adams Masonic Lodge #164,
Norfolk, Arkansas was chartered Nov. 7, 1861 by 20 charter members,
including Azariah Tinnin, who was elected Secretary.
Shortly after the Civil War, Azariah and Amanda, along with their
family, moved to Salado, Texas. Azariah had Tinnin cousins who settled
this area. (one cousin, Jeramiah Tinnin had gone there with Robertson's
Colony.) Azariah had a general merchandise store just across the street
from the Old Stage Coach Inn in Salado. He was also a blacksmith, and a
"jack of all trades", which he picked up from his father and
father-in-law, Jacob Wolf, no doubt. When he moved to Salado, one of his
first actions was to join the Masons in Texas.See also
