Tuesday Troubadours

February 12, 2008: Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed playing my brief cameo set at Tuesday Troubadours at the Austin Grill in Rockville, MD, last week. It's a remarkably good atmosphere, and there was lots of good music. Many thanks to Bob Sima for the invitation and for organizing a great night for singer-songwriters.

December 20, 2007: Colin's third and latest CD is now available for download at DigStation.com and will be available for purchase online at the web's premiere independent music store, CD Baby, within a matter of days!

(In other news, as you will have seen, our blue days are behind us. The website is in the process of going red!)

Time Flies!

9 April 2007: Yowza! I can't believe it's been five months since my last post here on the website. My apologies for the extended radio silence.

It's been a pretty remarkable few months, I have to say. I'm back in the US, back in Washington, DC, to be more precise, and so far loving it. I miss the people in The Netherlands (and my bike, although not the rain or the grey skies), but it's great to be back in the States. I had an amazing break over December and January, which I spent with friends and family mostly in Illinois and Alabama, but also with a fun stop in Brevard, NC (more on that in a second). One of the main motivators for coming back to the US was to be closer to friends and family, and so far I'm really enjoying that aspect of life on this side of the Pond!

OK, so what have I been doing with myself besides finding an apartment, starting a new job, and planning a wedding? Well, as fate would have it, I crammed two weeks of recording into my winter break, with the help and company of some amazing friends and musicians. Jerry Trapp and Suzanne Schmitt were basically pressed into service as I selfishly dominated their time during the entire first two weeks of this wonderful new year. We recorded in Helen Trapp's living room in Lillian, AL for more than a week before heading to Brevard, NC to wrap things up before I drove on to DC. Along the way we had amazing contributions of time and musical energy from the likes of Louis on the harp and Jim Trapp with percussion (both fellow Moon Shine Babies with Jerry and Suzanne), Rutledge Leland on mandolin, Shannon Whitworth lending her gorgeous voice, and the frankly stunning Megan Gregory on the fiddle. What a time we had! The hardest part was trying to decide when to record and when to just party and make music. It's times like those when you realize how sweet life can be. Anyhow, I am mixing the results these days, hoping to get a finished product ready for release sometime before the end of the summer. If the draft mixes are any indication, I think this will be hands down my best CD so far. I hope you'll agree.

OK. I guess that's enough rambling for one post, even if it has been a while since the last one. I'll try not to be so long incomunicado this time. Take care, everybody, of yourselves and of each other,

Colin

Now On MySpace

5 November 2006: I finally got with the program and have created a page on MySpace: www.myspace.com/colinblackmusic/. In addition to listening to a couple of songs from "No. 2" while you're there, please take a moment to explore some of the "friends" pages which I will gradually be linking up with. Guthrie Trapp, the Moon Shine Babies, Gove Scrivenor, and many more great artists from back home have pages on MySpace, and I guarantee you will find some real treasures.

Hope to see some of you at the Lokaal gig tonight!

Colin

Headed Back Across the Sea!

17 September 2006: Well, folks. The time has come. After five phenomenal years in The Netherlands, I am moving back to the US in December. From January or so (after some down time in Alabama which I hope to spend recording a new CD), I'll be living once again in Washington, DC (where Sandra will join me as soon as possible). I will never forget the many friends I've made here, including all the great musicians and super music fans who have helped make these years special. In all likelihood, I'll still be visiting once in a while, so this will not mean good-bye to those of you in The Hague and around, but it does mean a new stage and new adventures. I hope to see all of you before I leave, and in any event you'll be hearing more from me here at the website. Thanks for everything!

Colin

Colin Returns to Lokaal Vredebruek on 5 November

17 September 2006: Colin will return to Lokaal Vredebreuk in The Hague on 5 November 2006, at 2100h, for a short set as part of the monthly Singer-Songwriter night, now organised by the Den Haag Songwriters Guild. This will likely be the last gig in Europe for some time, so please come out and join us.

Happy Birthday Fred!

16 June 2006: This is a little belated, because I've been too busy for my own good this week, but I wanted to extend my thanks and congratulations again to Fred Schmale and his wife, Gineke. Fred kindly invited me to play a few songs at their combined birthday party this last Saturday. It was a wonderful party, and a real pleasure to meet their friends (including some serious music fans!).

Thanks very much, Fred. Sandra and I wish you and Gineke many happy returns. All the best,

Colin

Photos From Acoustic Alley

9 May 2006: As promised, I've put together a few photos from Sunday's show at Acoustic Alley (below is one by Rob Hogeslag). Many thanks to Frank Bukkems, Rob Hogeslag, and Ton Bongers for taking the photos and sending them to me.

Looking forward to the next time,

Colin

A Great Sunday at Acoustic Alley

8 May 2006: Many thanks to all of you who came out yesterday to the Singer-songwriter Day at Acoustic Alley. Everything was just right - good music, good atmosphere - it's a good life!

Special thanks, of course, to Alexandra Bilak, for singing with me again. Bon voyage, Alex (she's moving to Africa this week)! And many thanks as well to Frank and the rest of the Acosutic Alley organisers, and especially the sound crew, for putting on a marathon music festival from noon to nine. Very impressive, and much appreciated by musicians and fans alike. Thanks!

I hope to post some photos of the recent shows here on the website soon.

In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful Spring weather,

Colin

A Good Time Had By All At Lokaal Vredebruek!

1 May 2006: Thanks to everyone who came out for last night's show. It was a great, friendly atmosphere. And very special thanks to Alexandra Bilak, who joined me on stage for the first time and knocked everyone's socks off with her beautiful voice!

Please join us this coming Sunday at Acoustic Alley, where Alex and I will appear together - again and for the last time in the foreseeable future, because she is moving to Africa the very next day!

See you soon,

Colin

Colin Will Appear at Lokaal Vredebruek on 30 April 2006!

6 March 2006: Another date to add to your calendars ... Colin will appear for a short set at Lokaal Vredebreuk in The Hague on 30 April 2006, 2100h, as part of their monthly Singer-Songwriter night. The Lokaal is a cool and funky place with very friendly owners and staff - come join us for a Sunday evening of music!

Colin Will Play at Acoustic Alley on 7 May 2006!

13 February 2006: Acoustic Alley is hosting a Singer-songwriter Day mini-festival on 7 May 2006, and I'll be one of the acts featured. The music will start around noon and stretch well into the evening - hours and hours of great free music in a great atmosphere - more details to come.

This is particularly satisfying for me, because Acoustic Alley is one of my favorite venues in The Hague to see great acoustic music. I know from sitting in the audience myself many times that people go there to really listen to the music and lyrics, and the atmosphere is always relaxed and friendly - everything a songwriter longs for.

I hope you'll join us on 7 May. It should be a blast!

Colin

No. 2 Available for Digital Download

3 February 2006: Some time ago I mentioned that I would be working to make No. 2 available digitally on the Web. Since then, with the help of CDBaby.com, No. 2 has become available on dozens of Internet music download sites, such as Apple's iTunes, MSN Music, MusicMatch, MP3 Tunes, and many others (as some of you have already discovered!). So, if you've trashed your old CD player and have converted 100% to an iPod or mp3 player, don't despair - No. 2 is still yours at the click of a mouse. With most of the services, you can buy the entire album or just your favorite songs. Check it out, and tell your friends!

Most important, enjoy the music!

Colin

Happy New Year!

11 January 2006: Happy New Year, Everybody! I just returned to Holland after three glorious weeks in the US, first in Chicago and then in Alabama. The second half, in Alabama, was an absolute music fest! We took over Pirates Cove on a few different nights and played until the wee hours, and I also spent a lot of time playing and singing with Jerry Trapp and Suzanne Schmitt of Moon Shine Babies, as well as a bunch of other great musicians (including Jim and Sarah Trapp also of Moon Shine Babies, Adrian Percy of the Fugitive Poets, Les Lyden, Louis, Hoyt, Chris, David ... and more). To all of you, thanks so much. There's nothing better than hanging out making great music with great people. What a life!

On top of all that, the weather was phenomenal, and I got to spend a lot of time with family and old friends. So, it's pretty hard re-adjusting to "real life" now, but it's all just interlude until the next jam session or reunion, right?

Best wishes to you all for 2006!

Colin

Cafe Paard van Troje Show a Big Success

16 November 2005: Thanks to everyone who came out for last night's show at Cafe Paard (photo below). It was really great to see so many people there. It was a great night - excellent venue, fun to play, great sound, amazing audience, and overall fantastic atmosphere. It was also a pleasure to meet Sonja and Jan of Markowski, who played a fine set to finish off the evening.

It's a good life (even if I am hoarse and a little hungover today). See you next time!

Colin

Guthtrie Trapp at the Birchmere, and Colin at Paard Cafe on 15 November!

25 October 2005: It's been busy, busy lately! The weekend before last I was back in the States for a couple days and got to see my friend Guthrie Trapp play the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA with Patty Loveless. It was a great show, cool to meet Patty and the band, and most of all wonderful to see Guthrie up on stage with such impressive musicians and good people. Guthrie always was the best guitar player around back home in Lower Alabama - now he's vindicated us all by making the Big Time in Nashville. Very cool. (Guthrie's parents, Mary amd Joe Trapp, were also at the show celebrating their wedding anniversary. It was great to see you guys! Congrats again!)

On a lesser plane, perhaps, but news nonetheless, I'll be appearing 15 November 2005 at Paard Cafe in The Hague. Paard Cafe is the bar/cafe part of Paard van Troje (Trojan Horse), the best music venue in The Hague for Americana music. They have a monthly Unplugged show featuring singer-songwriters, and I'll be sharing that bill in November with Markoswki and Dylan Francis. Should be a great show. Please come out and join us!

Take care, everybody!

Colin

Katrina Update, DSA, and Kimmie Rhodes

16 September 2005: Hey, folks! Quick update on Katrina - just to say that we're hearing about a lot of New Orleans musicians who have been badly affected by Katrina. My best wishes go out to all of them. Fortunately, it seems that most of my music pals there are fine and safely out of the city. For instance, Brian Rueb, who co-produced and played on my first CD, got out early and is fine. Hirsh Katzen, who sang with me on both CDs, is also fine and safely out with his family, although anxious to get back. Hirsh told me an amazing story about making a midnight drive to NOLA from Houston to save his favorite guitars (OK, so maybe he was a little concerned about his house, etc., but I think it was the guitars that made him go back in ... ).

One exciting bit of news - "The Shape of My Hat", from the current CD, has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Americana/Folk category of the Dallas Songwriters' Association 2005 Song Contest! Winners will be announced later this year.

Another exciting bit of news - Last night I had the pleasure and good fortune to see (and meet) singer-songwriter Kimmie Rhodes here in The Hague. She gave a fabulous show - beautiful voice, gorgeous songs, and able backing from her band (her husband and son, if I'm not mistaken). Great show! Thanks, Kimmie, for passing through, and thanks to Joanna Serraris as always for making it all possible.

That's all for now. Take care, everybody, and go have some fun!

Colin

Hurricane Katrina

5 September 2005: I guess it goes without saying that my thoughts and best wishes go out to all the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The scenes from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are about enough to break one's heart.

My deepest thanks to all of you who have asked in recent days about my mother and the rest of the gang at Pirates Cove, AL. I'm relieved to report that we came through the storm very well, with some minor damage but nothing like what they suffered in Mississippi and Louisiana.

I encourage anyone who can to donate to the Red Cross or another charity helping the victims. It will be a long recovery, especially for those who didn't have much to begin with. I will donate any and all proceeds from sales of No. 2 at CB Baby this month to the Red Cross as well. Kudos and thanks to CD Baby for setting up the program.

Courage and good luck to all those affected -- everyone's thoughts are with you!

Colin

Alabama, Alabama ... I Hate to Leave You Again ...

16 August 2005: Just got off the red-eye flight back from the US this morning, and wow am I jet-lagged! It was a phenomenal week in 'Bama, though, which probably would have induced a dream-like state even without the severe sleep deprivation and copious amounts of alcohol. It was great to see everyone.

As usual, music was the core of the week's activity. Pirates Cove "riff-raff" Les and Woody were very gracious in inviting me to sing with them on two different nights at the Cove, in addition to the Wednesday open mic night. And the Moon Shine Babies, featuring brothers Jerry and Jim Trapp and songwriter Suzanne Schmitt, were equally welcoming on Sunday evening at Hub Stacey's. And that was just the "organised" music! On top of that were glorious jam sessions almost every day/night of the week, including a relaxed night of song-swapping with the Moon Shine Babies and a howling-at-the-moon sing-along at the Cove that lasted into the wee hours.

Unfortunately, a large part of the music-making was occasioned by the passing of our dear friend Helen Trapp, 82, of Lillian, AL. Helen was the mother of Jerry and Jim Trapp (and their older brother Joe), and the grandmother of now-Nashville-based guitar phenom Guthrie Trapp, who took time out from touring with Patty Loveless to come home for his grandma's funeral. Sad circumstances, but it was great to see him, and to see a local boy living the dream in the biggest way possible. In fact, the week before she died, Helen went up to Nashville and saw Guthrie play at the Grand Ole Opry and at the Ryman Auditorium. After that, she must have thought she was going out on a high! Helen will always be remembered as the source of the incredible openness and love of music which marks the entire Trapp clan. We'll miss her, and everytime we play "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown," we'll always think of her.

I need to go get some sleep. Thanks to everyone who played and listened these last 10 days or so -- I can't wait to see you all again soon!

Colin

Summer Time!

22 July 2005: Life has gotten busy again -- that's the reason for no "news" in the last few weeks. In a few days, I head off to Mexico for 10 days of beach and Mayan ruins, which I am very excited about, followed by 10 days back home in "L.A." -- "lower Alabama"! No shows are planned for the Alabama trip, although it's practically a sure thing that we will be playing on the porch at Pirates Cove and around during the course of 5-15 August. Stop by if you're in the neighbourhood.

I'd also note that, after months in the Americana Top 10 (reaching as high as #6), "Let's Go To New Orleans" has finally reached the end of its active status at Garageband.com. You can still listen to the song in its entirety at Garageband.com, and track it's position in the all-time Americana charts, where it currently sits at #44. Thanks to all those who supported the song there.

Finally, keep your eye on the CD reviews at the Real Roots Cafe, where a great review of "No. 2" by Rein van den Berg should post in August!

OK, enjoy the summer everyone! Hopefully I'll see many of you in 'Bama soon,

Colin

The Boss!

20 June 2005: I saw Springsteen in concert last night in Rotterdam. One man show, almost entirely acoustic ... he played a lot of guitar (6- and 12-string, acoustic and electric) and harmonica, was fantastic on the piano (and organ and foot-pedalled organ), and even broke out a six-stringed banjo for "Fire." He played for two and a half hours with no break, just him, pouring everything he had into the performance. The crowd, needless to say, was eating out of the palm of his hand and everyone had an amazing time. In short, it was everything that you always hear about a Springsteen show. Absolutely phenomenal!

Apart from being an amazing concert by any measure, it was also particularly inspiring for someone who aspires to be at least minimally entertaining playing original songs with usually just a guitar and harmonica (i.e., me). The Boss proved to me last night that with enough hard work, energy, show biz know-how, and oh yeah ... genius, anything is possible.

Colin

Major Career Milestone!

16 June 2005: OK, I didn't see it with my own eyes (which as usual were closed in deep concentration ... ) but I have it from several good sources that during my mini-set at the Tuesday Night Music Club this week, PEOPLE DANCED! Slow-danced. Couples. Two of them. Amazing ... somehow it never really occurred to me that people might dance to my music ... I feel like this is some kind of reward sent down by the Music Gods to keep me performing (and taking the train to Amsterdam on Tuesday nights) ... very cool.

Pleasantly surprised,

Colin

More Amsterdam Songwriters Guild!

11 June 2005: I just keep having more and more fun with the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild, who have very graciously admitted me to their ranks and featured me on the ASG Web Blog. I joined them again this last week for the Tuesday Night Music Club, which is growing week by week. It's cool to hear some new players in addition to the great regulars.

Thanks, ASG - See you next Tuesday!

Colin

By the way, I've added a Calendar Page in case people are interested in catching a live show. For the time being, there's no serious touring or even intense "playing out" planned, but especially with the variety of ASG events occuring on a regular basis, a Calendar page seemed like a good idea. Please come out and enjoy some live music!

New Lyrics Page

3 June 2005: OK, so it's a lot of news for one day here at colinblack.com - what can I say? I just wanted to alert everyone that there is a new LYRICS page with the words to all of the songs on the new album - "No. 2".

I repeat: Have a great weekend,

Colin

Music on the Beach with the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild!

31 May 2005: Just a quick note to say what a good time I had playing music on Saturday with the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild (ASG) at the Skyline Australian Beach Bar in Zandvoort. Plenty of sun and good music the first half of the day, followed by a cozy indoor songfest with a number of great songwriters as we watched the sun set over the North Sea. Sometimes you just know that life is good. : - )

The ASG has plenty of great events going on all the time, so if you're in Amsterdam or the surrounding area, be sure to consult their webpage and go out and support their songwriters. You won't be disappointed.

Have a good week,

Colin

Amsterdam Songwriters Guild, Music This Saturday, and Garageband.com!

26 May 2005: Lots going on these days! Tuesday evening I went to my first Tuesday Night Music Club, an open mic organised by the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild. It's a great event with great songwriters, so come out some Tuesday evening and enjoy the music. I plan to be there myself as often as I can.

Speaking of the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild, I'll join them this Saturday for some live music at Skyline Australian Beach Bar in Zandvoort for an afternoon (and evening ... ?) of sun, beer, BBQ and music. Join us!

And last but not least, "Let's Go To New Orleans" continues its climb up the charts at Garageband.com and is now into the Top 10 on the Americana chart!

As I say - busy, busy. Have a great weekend everybody,

Colin

Blue Highways Festival in Utrecht

26 April 2005: The annual Blue Highways Festival in Utrecht, Netherlands was held this last Saturday, and it was just a fantastic as last year! We saw amazing sets from Jim Lauderdale, Tom Russell, Kate and Anna McGarrigle and many others. The biggest revelation of the day was without a doubt Tres Chicas - what great voices! And tons of charm and charisma. Son Volt was also good (and loud) as expected - decidedly less country than the original line-up, but the show definitely piqued my interest for the new CD.

So thanks to the organisers and the artists - it's a great festival. And special thanks to the very charming Tonya Lamm of Tres Chicas for taking the time to chat for a second. All in all, a festival to be remembered!

Have a good week everybody,

Colin

I'm going to the Blue Highways Festival in Utrecht tomorrow for 9 non-stop hours of great live Americana music. I'll give you a report next week.

Enjoy the weekend,

Colin

"Goin' Dancin'" on Long Distance Radio Show!

22 April 2005: Many thanks to Nico Druijf of Radio Hoorn's Long Distance radio show for including "Goin' Dancin'" on his 20 April 2005 program. I can't say enough how much I appreciate the response to "No. 2" among Americana radio shows in The Netherlands. Thanks for your support!

Thank You Alt Country Cooking!

11 April 2005: Another heartfelt thank you to Theo Oldenburg and Joanna Bodde of Alt Country Cooking for playing my music. "Let's Go To New Orleans" made the playlist last Thursday, 7 April. Thanks to you both, Theo and Johanna!

Flavor of the Month at Alt Country Cooking!

3 April 2005: A huge thank you to the folks at Alt Country Cooking for naming me and "No. 2" the current Flavor of the Month! Here's a taste of what they had to say:

" ... fascinating singer-songwriter works with acoustic guitar and harmonica, made even more intriguing by a few beautiful choruses, and of course Colin’s own handsome voice, which at times reminds one of John Denver. An exceptionally pleasing album."

If you want to read the whole thing (and your Dutch is good enough!), click the Alt Country Cooking link above.

Thanks for the kind words, Alt Country Cooking!

Colin

More Radio Fun!

31 March 2005: Thanks again to Raymond Swennen of Roots Revival for playing my music this past week. "I Want You To Love Me" was played on Roots Revival's 28 March 2005 broadcast, marking the third time a song from "No. 2" has featured on the show in recent weeks.

I can't thank Raymond and other like-minded DJs here in Belgium and the Netherlands often enough or loudly enough for their support of my music (and lots of other greats independent musicians).

Thanks guys (and gals)! Have a great weekend,

Colin

Steve Young and Jubal Lee Young

24 March 2005: I just wanted to share a great music experience - last night I saw legendary singer-songwriter Steve Young and his son Jubal Lee Young play at Chalet Ockenburg in The Hague, Netherlands. Thanks to Steve and Jubal Lee for the amazing show and for taking the time to visit between sets and after the music was done - it was a pleasure to meet you both. And many thanks as well to Joanna Serraris of Musemix for putting such an event together. Great music and great people - evenings like that remind me why life is good.

Looking forward to the next time already,

Colin

17 January 2005: I'm very happy to announce that the new CD is finished and arrived in my hands last week! Thanks so much to all those involved in this process -- the disc looks and sounds great.

In the coming weeks, this website and my Broadjam page will be updated to showcase the new album, and the CD itself will soon be available for purchcase online. Eventually I hope to make it available digitally through iTunes or a similar service, as well. Needless to say, I will keep you all updated right here on the website.

As always, thanks for your support, and I hope you enjoy the music. All the best,

Colin

Happy New Year!

7 January 2005: Happy New Year, everybody! Hard to believe that it's 2005 already.

It was really great to get to see so many of you over the holidays back in the good ole US of A. Special thanks to the Trapps and the Cove crowd for so much fun music. I got to pick and sing a fair bit with the ever-more-popular Jerry Trapp (he's opening and closing the Flatrock Music Festival these days, you know), and he and his brother Jim even kindly invited me onstage to play a few songs with them at Hub Stacey's on Innerarity Point. Best of all, though, was the last night's bonfire sing-along that consumed an entire night, plenty of firewood, a couple of bottles of rum and a whole batch of homemade kahlua ... A good time was had by all, as you might imagine.

The new CD is being pressed as I type these words. I'll let you know as soon as it is available!

Take care, and best of luck for the new year,

Colin
