23. Maintain VLAN configuration consistency in a switched network

VTP2 is better than 1 because
  • Token ring support
  • Unrecognized type/length/value (TLV) support
  • Version-dependent transparent mode
  • Consistency checks
  • Automatic propagation to switches capable running VTP2
VTP modes on operation
  1. Client: Prevent the new switch from accidentally propagating the incorrect information to the existing network.
  2. Server: Intend to add additional switches.
  3. Transparent: Not going to share VLAN information with any other switch on the network allowing to create, delete, and rename VLANs at will without the switch propagating changes to other switches.
