MLS 4 step processes

  1. The MLS-RP sends MLSP hello packets
  2. The MLS-SE identifies candidate packets
  3. The MLS-SE identifies enable packets
  4. The MLS-SE shortcuts future packets

MLS 3 separate aging times

  • Quick aging, utilized to age out partial shortcut entries that never get completed by an enable packet.
  • Normal aging, uses for the typical sort of data transfer flow.
  • Fast aging, used to age short-term data flows such as DNS, ping, and TFTP.

The Null domain

  • Could be done intentionally
  • Could be a typing error
  • Could have entered the MLS interface command before specifying a VTP domain

When to use MLS

  • Need more throughput
  • Increased routing performance

A flow mask is used to set the granularity with which MLS creates flows and builds shortcut entries. Its types

  • Destination
  • Source-destination
