The following information has been taken from tf13 ‘The Rural Exploitation of Urban Areas’ published on april 12th 1999. Ehrlichs, Anne and Paul.
"While the proportion of the land area
directly dedicated to human habitation is small - perhaps 2% at most -
some 11% is used to grow crops and another 25% is regularly grazed by
domestic animals."[93] Gray, John.
Gray quotes lovelock that ecological problems may
not be caused by our industrialized existence, “The destruction of wild
nature by farming, the mechanization of agriculture .. are far more dangerous
threats to the diversity and integrity of the natural environment than
life in cities. Indeed, it would seem to be an element in an ecological
perspective on human society to view the city as one of the most distinctive
features of human ecology, and one of the most civilized institutional
inventions of the species.”[94] Joseph, Lawrence E.
“The most important practical difference between
Gaia and mainstream environmental policy is in its emphasis on the evils
of agriculture over those of industry, since deforestation for the purpose
of food cultivation is what most immediately threatens the tropical rainforests
and the warm coastal seas that surround them.”[95];
“Getting rid of cattle is one of the most important Gaian steps of all.”[96]
Krause, Florentin; Bach, Wilfrid; &
Koomey, Jon.
"The greatest change in the terrestrial biospheric
carbon reservoir occurs through human agricultural activity. This activity
can be broadly defined as the transformation of forests into non-forests
for pasture or crop production purposes."[97] Lovelock, James.
"I think that by far the greatest damage
we do to the Earth, and thus by far the greatest threat to our own survival,
comes from agriculture."[98]; “Gaia
requires us to live sensibly with the Earth, and this would require that
we restore the natural habitats we have destroyed to feed people. This
requires politically difficult choices, such as giving up meat eating
or reducing our numbers to a third or less.”[99]; .. “to produce food as beef or dairy products
requires twenty times as much land as its vegetable equivalent. I do not
propose that we all try to become vegetarian. Better first to think about
africa. We know that there is frequently famine here, yet few seem to
realize that much of this distress comes as a direct result of land damage
by primitive cattle farming. In africa, it is not overpopulation with
people that is the problem but overpopulation with livestock.”[100] Rifkin, Jeremy.
"The elimination of beef and other meat from
the human diet is now required if we are to have any hope of saving the
planet and ensuring our children's future."[101] Ritchie, Mark .
"Agriculture is the main human activity on Earth
and the principal influence on our planet's ecology. Over half the inhabitants
of the planet are farmers."[102] Wuerthner, George.
"Certainly, on a world wide basis, one could
argue that no single human enterprise is responsible for more environmental
degradation than livestock production."[103] |
