This page contains information on Buffy characters and developments that occurred during seasons 1 and 2.
Buffy Anne Summers - Buffy comes from a troubled upbringing. She learns that she has been chosen as the Vampire Slayer leading to conflicts with a group of vampires that leads to her being expelled from school. At about that same time, her parents get a divorce and she and her mother move to Sunnydale to start over again.
But she soon learns that Sunnydale is on a hellmouth (a portal between Earth and a demon dimension) and has to stop The Master, an ancient vampire from unleashing hell on Earth. After several skirmishes with the Masters minions she finally faces off against him to stop his deadly plans. Along the way she becomes allied with Angel, a vampire cursed with a soul, who fights against the forces of evil. And is also aided by her friends who form a gang called the Scoobies and help her to fight the bad guys.
Eventually she and Angel become closer but that leads no a situation that reverses the curse and Angel becomes the evil Angelus. For the next several months Angelus, who allies himself with vampires Spike and Drusilla, torments Buffy and her friends. Eventually this leads to a showdown between the two as Angelus prepares to unleash a demon into our dimension that could destroy everyone.
Willow Rosenberg - Willow is the brains behind the Scooby Gang, the gang that helps Buffy in her struggle against the vampires and demons. Willow is a top student and a whiz with computers, which she uses to aid Buffy and Giles with research. That knowledge backfires on her though when a demonic force tries to seduce her through the Internet.
Willow is infatuated by Xander and has been friends with him since they were children. Xander though has other plans and eventually Willow meets Oz. Willow and Oz hit it off and become a couple. After Jenny Calendar's death Willow takes over her computer class and begins looking through her files on the occult and witchcraft. This begins Willow's long journey into the study of witchcraft and, with assistance, was able to use spells during the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance incident and in restoring Angel's soul.
Xander Harris - Buffy's classmate at Sunnydale High. Buffy knocked Xander off his feet from the moment he first laid eyes on her. Xander was also the first to discover the secret of her being a Slayer. His best friend Jesse soon became a vampire and Xander was soon forced into a situation where he would have to stake his best friend. This was followed by a string of events in which bad mojo began happening to him. From mantis women to Inca mummies to becoming part hyena, bad things began happening to him. Xander soon turned things around and saved Buffy's life after her run-in with the Master.
Xander does not like Angel! There's never a doubt about that. During Halloween Xander is put under a spell in which he becomes an expert soldier. After being attacked by a man made of flesh-eating worms Xander encounters an ever greater horror - being trapped in the basement with Cordelia. A spell gone awry makes Xander irresistible to all women including having Drusilla go crazy over him. He later joins the school's swim team to discover its hidden secrets.
Rupert Giles - The Watcher assigned to train Buffy to be a vampire slayer. Giles also serves as the Sunnydale school librarian which allows him to keep secret texts and research material on the occult. Giles helps unravel ancient secrets of the Harvest, the Anointed One and the prophecy that Buffy will die in her battle against the Master.
When a sleepwalker demon begins targeting Giles and friends from his past, the Scooby gang becomes aware of Giles' past experimentations with the black arts during his youth as well as his nickname "Ripper". His romantic interest in Jenny Calendar become affected when he learns the truth about her and her people's involvement in Angel's curse. He later is captured and tortured by Angelus to help him unlock a secret that will destroy the world.
Cordelia Chase - Cordelia is a spoiled and stuck-up member of the Sunnydale elite. Her family is very rich and Cordy looks down on the "loser" students like Xander and Willow. She is also willing to do whatever she can to get what she wants including being a cheerleader. To her dismay she eventually gets sucked into their circle of extreme loser-ness.
Her spiral of self-perceived downward mobility increases after she gets trapped by Xander in the basement trying to escape a man made out of flesh eating worms. Both are embarrassed by their mutual attraction and have to hide their affections for each other from their circles of friends. When the truth about their relationship comes out she falls out of favor with the cool gang in school.
Angel - Angel was approached by a demon named Whistler and told about the importance of a new vampire slayer named Buffy Summers. Angel introduced himself to Buffy and helped her stop the Master from freeing himself from the energy field in which he was trapped. Angel assisted Buffy in battling several creatures over the next several months including his own sire, Darla.
As they began to work together more and more, Angel and Buffy began getting close. When Spike and Drusilla come to Sunnydale they capture Angel in an attempt to use him to heal Drusilla. And, unknown to Buffy or Angel, a side effect of the curse that was placed on Angel is that if he ever to know true happiness he will revert back to Angelus, which they soon find out the hard way. Having reverted to the evil Angelus, he spends months tormenting Buffy and her friends until Buffy is left with no other choice but to sacrifice him to save the world.
Joyce Summers - Just having rebounded from a failed marriage, Joyce has to relocate with her seemingly troubled daughter to a new town and new job. Joyce works long hours at the art gallery but still finds time to do what she can to try to relate to her daughter. She's continually worried about the endless and unexplainable predicaments her daughter gets into.
In Buffy's junior year of school, Joyce is invited to Parent-Teacher Night at the school that turns into a vamp-fest when Spike and his gang attack Buffy and the Scooby gang. The incident turns out to have a positive effect on their relationship and Joyce has a new respect for her daughter's courage in a dangerous situation. She's later disappointed when she learns about Buffy's prior relationship with Angel but soon learns the truth that her daughter is a vampire slayer. Joyce insists that Buffy give up her slaying but Buffy leaves in order to save the world and afterwards leaves home without explanation.
Spike - Spike and Drusilla arrived in Sunnydale and one of his first acts was to attack Buffy during a parent-teacher conference at her high school. After a few skirmishes, including a plot to use Angel to cure the ailing Drusilla, Spike and Dru are reunited with the evil Angelus. Angelus plans included constantly tormenting Buffy and her friends. Unfortunately Spike had been injured and stuck in a wheelchair after an unsuccessful plot of his own. But that wouldn't stop him from turning the tables on Angelus' plan to destroy the world.
Drusilla - Drusilla was physically injured in Prague, which left her weak. Spike took care of her and brought her to Sunnydale where they captured Angel and used him to heal her. After Spike was injured and the evil Angelus restored, they set upon a plan to use an ancient demon to destroy the world.
The Master - Having been resurrected by the vampire Luke, the Master and his followers embark on a plan to begin the Harvest. The Harvest is a ritual that will free the Master from the energy barrier that imprisons him underground. After that plan fails, the Master seta events in motion that calls forth the Anointed One which will lead to the death of the vampire slayer.
Darla - After having rejected Angel, Darla eventually returned to serve the Master. She assisted Luke in attempting to bring about the Harvest. Eventually she tried to destroy Buffy and ended up dying after battling Buffy and Angel.
Oz - A musician in a local rock band, Oz becomes interested in Willow. The two of them begin dating and Oz is brought into the Scooby Gang. After being bit by his young cousin, Oz discovers that he is a werewolf and must be restrained whenever the moon is full.
Principal Snyder - The obnoxious principal at Buffy's high school. Snyder loves his job but hates the kids, especially Buffy. Snyder obsesses with finding ways to catch Buffy and prove that she's nothing but the young delinquent he thinks she is. He is delighted when he finally gets the opportunity to expel her from school.
Jenny Calendar - As Jenny has returned to help Giles and the Scooby Gang, she begins to grow closer to Giles. But Jenny has a secret. She's part of the surviving members of the Gypsy tribe that cursed Angel a century before. After Angel reverts back to Angelus, Jenny's secret is revealed and she is shunned by her former allies. Jenny tries to make amends by restoring Angel's soul and nearly succeeds, but the plan ends tragically.
Kendra the Vampire Slayer - After Buffy was temporarily dead, a new slayer was called upon to battle the forces of evil. Kendra comes to Sunnydale to assist Buffy in battling Spike, Drusilla and the Order of Taraka. After having completed that task she returns to her duties overseas. She is called upon once again to help Buffy stop Angelus from unleashing hell on Earth but is forced to fight a final battle with Drusilla.
